In California, it's legal for motorcycles to share lanes. It's a bad idea to do it at high speed, and nobody in his right mind really does it except on the freeway in traffic at a crawl. But it seems that in Russia, it's accepted practice to try to knock people off their bikes by opening a car door or even backing into them! That's just mean-spirited. Of course, in this video we saw that if try to pull that on a police motorcycle, you're going to have a really bad day!

As played by the USMC band, the march becomes cheerful, even playful, rather than grandiose or ponderous. An American march is meant to be played in a quick and cocky style, the way that little kids in bare feet skip around. The Marine band gets it exactly right.
I also notice that the band is exactly the right size. Not too small to have the music become thin or tinny, and not too large to bowl over the audience. And, of course, the musicians are superb.

+Joe Malin the balance among the ensemble is so beautiful -- when they hit the last strain, you can hear the melody, both counterlines, the horns/tuba accompaniment, and percussion all just perfectly balanced -- just right on!

After watching nearly 35 of the series, which by the way is excellent, I've come to this carefully-considered conclusion: Russian drivers are nuts!

Traffic rules? There don't seem to be any I can see. Other than maybe it's against the law to drive slow.😀

So this guy breaks the near-space jump record. alan eustace.

Wait... ALAN EUSTACE?! Not the Alan Eustace?

Indeed, it's him. Mild-mannered Clark Kent, er, Alan Eustace, VP at Google, is in reality...

SUPERMAN! W00T! Strikes a blow for nerds everywhere!!!

The Bundeswehr is, I think, a break from the past mistakes of the German government and its armies. The modern tradition insists on the subordination of the Heer to the civilian government as well as a duty to act with righteous and honor. Well, OK, who knows what will happen in the future? But it's a start.
And as for the power of the Bundeswehr, well, for the love of Pete, if you're going to have an army make it a good one! If the government does its job, the better the army, the fewer people die.
I'm not so stupid as to think that we'll get rid of armies anytime soon. But I already see that many countries have learned the foolishness of going to war. If we have to have armies for the next 100 years, I hope that all of the servicemen and servicewomen will spend 99% of their time being bored.

Your videos are always great. This one, though, brought tears to my eyes. I kept thinking "No body gets hurt, then I see that body lying in the road. Sigh. I have to figure that some cars aren't on winter tires, but most of the accidents seemed to be caused by people in too much of a damn hurry. Don't drive so fast, dude, they can't hold the funeral without you!

It's pouring down rain in San Jose. That wouldn't be news anywhere else, but in California, in the midst of a multi-year drought...

It being California, nobody uses an umbrella. Or boots. :)

Proof of rain over the Bay Area.

One of my favorite planes of all time. No other patrol plane of WW II did more. Key asset at Midway, air/sea rescue throughout the war, effective night bomber. AND, they're still serving today!
I liked the documentary, too. Beneath the rah-rah propaganda you'd expect from a US Navy documentary, a good glimpse at the informality and "shoestring budget" aspects of the war on the front lines. The beards are definitely against regs, but when you're flying an obsolete bomber at night in low-level attacks against the IJN, the brass look the other way.
