I will be accumulating a list of me-specific links &c. here. If you have a better way to get in touch with me, you might want to use it first. I further suggest you not use either of the last two, assuming they even work. Otherwise, in roughly descending order:

Somebody decided they literally wanted to gross a over million dollars on a barrel of scotch. Yes, it's 47 years old, but come on, they're really just pushing to see how much they can charge. The bottle is 70 cl, so that's about $549/fl. oz., or about $18.57 per milliliter. Drinking a cumshot of it would cost you over 2 grand with tip.

Don't spill any, fer chrissake.

Added Pashpost. I think that makes 14 different platforms, not including this one. Too much and not enough, as my friend Michael used to say.

I admire the, um, spirit of those crafting tasty zero-alcohol drinks. I hope the market for them comes to fruition. But I think there's a fundamental misunderstanding here of why at least some people drink. If there are enough people not in the aforementioned group of drinkers who are willing to pay cocktail prices for mocktails, good. But I find it difficult to believe that ~12,000 years after the invention of agriculture, someone has just now come up with a way to make a pleasant experience in a glass that is somehow going to replace the cocktail. There's a reason people had forgotten about those old recipes. Revive, them, yes, and let's get what we can out of them. But "zero proof?" Yes, I get the joke. No, I don't think it's correct.

Sigh.

Some of us are retreating to blogs as an alternative to G+. I agree with this in principle; the practice means I need a decent RSS reader please don't mention the death of Google Reader. I used to use Sage, IIRC, with Firefox. But I can't do that right now. I'm using Inoreader instead, but it kinda sucks. Maybe I'm just not used to it yet, but I'm wondering what anyone else is using?

Please?

I thought I'd figured out how to deal with G+'s end of days problems by explicitly resyncing G+ data clientside. Now it seems like they don't want to push comments through. But they do push them through, since one can see them in the rotating comment display at the bottom of individual posts, when you're looking at your stream. Sigh.

This movie ruined my life.

When I was a kid – probably around the age of seven – I discovered science fiction. That's enough to ruin anyone, right? :)

I'm not sure what the first SF was I read, but one of the first novels I remember reading was The Isotope Man by Charles Eric Maine. I'm sure it was horrible, but in just now looking it up, I discover that it's part of a series:

https://www.fantasticfiction.com/m/charles-eric-maine/

I guess if it was part of a series, it couldn't be too bad, right? :)

I also don't remember what the first science fiction was I saw on television. My family never went to the movies, so it could have been a TV series, or it could have been some movie on television. On Saturday mornings, a UHF station near where I lived showed science fiction movies instead of cartoons. This is one reason I don't have the facility my friends do with comics and kids' TV shows. But I made up for it with crappy sci-fi movies on TV. This was where I would have first seen Gamera, Godzilla, The Fly – oh my god, who knows.

Anyway, that UHF station – IIRC, it was channel 40, but I don't remember the call sign – was probably where I saw this movie. I wish I could remember for sure, but I wish I could remember for sure a lot of the movies I saw on there, because some of them I can't find at all, and they were seminal in their way, at least for me. Because it was around this time I decided I wanted to be a writer. Of course, I wanted to write science fiction. And my first idea for a story: there was a planet 6 months away from Earth, with respect to its orbit, but we could never see it, because the sun was always in the way. I even figured out some of the holes in the plot. But a writer has to charge on somehow, right?

Then I saw this movie:

It ruined me. I could now never write my first, best idea for a story, because someone had already done it! What was I supposed to do, become a scientist or mathematician or something! Maybe an engineer? Again, who knows. I had a lot of imagination when I was a kid, but apparently not enough to get around this problem.

I'm still fighting this issue. Apparently, I haven't learned one of the first things about writing, which is that everyone steals – either that, or there are no original thoughts left, just re-tellings.

I'm still sending in G+ bug reports, because I'm like that.
