Received this stunner today.  Should be enough left for the headstock and some veneers, too.

As much as the plans for a design allow me to visualize what the finished product might look like, it does not tell me what I need to do to get there.  Like most hobbyist luthiers, I will be starting out with the tried-and-true method of building a series of templates that will both ensure that I a

In our last installment, we looked at some of the larger guiding principles in play, while designing the Kalon.  This time, we'll take a tour through the design, both explaining some of the reasoning behind the decisions, as well as taking a look at some of the things that have changed over th

Today's project - putting the router table together. My favorite kind of project, being one that can mostly be done inside the air conditioned house.

As I get closer to beginning construction of the first Kalon, I find myself continually going over the build steps in my mind.  One of the topics that has been prevalent has been about how to shield the cavities.  This design presents a small challenge in shielding, in that a semi-hollow body is

Right now, the waiting to start is the hardest part of this build.  I find myself in a temporary holding pattern, while I get the workshop area up and operational.  Like a lot of hobbyists, my workshop serves a primary duty of a garage most of the time.  Despite having a fairly roomy two-car gara

+Ponoko did an outstanding job on the Kalon Master templates.  The three body templates are stacked, in order.  Could not resist the temptation to put the tuners into the template to see how they looked.

I had not planned on visiting this part of the build so far out of order, having not even ordered the fretboard blank, yet.  While working on the templates for the Kalon, though, I started to put together other templates that I would need along the way, such as a two-piece humbucker template and a

The design that would become the Kalon started with no predispositions. That is, to say, it did not start out intending to look or function like any existing guitar or to be a visual clone to the various other guitars that would come to draw similarities with. What it became was based on a ...

Finally! Authentic New York-style pizza in the far Southeast Valley. We ordered two pies, a cheese and a pepperoni. Both were outstanding. The crust was perfect, which is the hardest thing to find in a good pizza. The crust has an outer snap, while the inside is elastic and airy. Just the right amount of sauce, and cooked to perfection. The place was packed, which is always a good sign. We took ours for carryout. This will definitely be our "go to" pizza place from now on.

Despite what people think about the inclusion of soup or egg roll or soda with their lunch special, a majority of the reviews to date really don't deal with the food. This is very much a NY-style Chinese restaraunt, with food an par of many of the takeout places I've frequented in Manhattan. The prices are inline with other Chinese restaurants in the area, and portions are normal, as well. Oil was fresh, which was apparent in the fried won tons and egg rolls that we had. Pork fried rice is easily the best I've had living in Arizona between two stints over thirteen years. Boneless BBQ ribs were pleasantly tender and very flavorful, as well. Not any off-cut meat or ligaments. Sesame Chicken was crisp and flavorful and not in the slightest bit soggy, like it is from most take away establishments. Decor was just "eh". Considering this is not a dine-in establishment, it is not much of a surprise. It was, however, spotlessly clean. Was told fifteen minutes for my order, and it was ready in ten. They have a return customer in our family, that is for sure.
