Inflammatory headline, but still a good read.

Witnessing all these shootings and killings creates a constant state of terror within minorities, not altogether different from the effect larger populations feel witnessing passenger planes flying into buildings, or gunmen cutting their way through schools and shopping malls, or children blowing themselves up in cramped bazaars. The issue doesn't involve absolute numbers; it involves the effect of knowing that at any time, your number could come up.

The difference is that when the Boston Marathon is bombed, or people fly planes into buildings, or an aggrieved loner goes on a killing spree, we, as a society, pursue justice to the very ends of the earth, if only to sleep better at night. When killer cops rarely, if ever, even step foot in court, let alone get convicted, the absence of immediate justice or punishment leads to an unaddressed fear. It's a fear of ubiquity; a fear that the carnage can be easily replicated, virtually anywhere, by virtually anyone; a fear that our lives don't matter.
Last Saturday, Walter Scott was driving his Mercedes in North Charleston, S.C., when he was pulled over by police officer Michael Slager for driving with a broken taillight. Scott had a complicated life, as many of us do. He was employed and engaged; he owed back child support; in all likelihood he really didn’t want to go to jail. When Slager approached, Scott ran.

Type: Rejected new submission (too close to another portal)
Name: 1966 Motobi 250cc
https://www.ingress.com/intel?ll=47.711570,-122.178801 (Kirkland, WA, USA)

This is one of several historic motorcycles inside an Italian restaurant, Cafe Veloce. Since two of them have been approved as portals, it's safe to say they're considered valid based on the criteria. Unfortunately, I submitted these motorcycles before I knew how to geotag my photos, so apparently I misplaced some of them. The above location should be far enough from the two existing portals.

Type: Rejected new submission (duplicate of another portal)
Name: Jesus Statue at Hope Lutheran Church
https://www.ingress.com/intel?ll=38.474817,-90.519268 (High Ridge, MO, USA)

This portal is truly what it says on the tin: a statue of Jesus at this particular church. The church portal ( https://www.ingress.com/intel?ll=38.475016,-90.519481&z=17&pll=38.475016,-90.519481 ) is about 30m away, but since the second-closest portal is about 250m away, I don't think this should be a problem. Since the statue is distinct from the church itself, I don't see how this is a duplicate at all. I apologize for the nighttime photo, but it's lit well enough to discern what it is.

+NIA Ops Does that mean you want a minimum of 35m between the proposed portal and the existing church portal? If not, what is that distance?

Now that we aren't getting credit for new submissions, my attention turns to the portal appeals process. One question I have: what do I do with duplicate rejections that appear to be duplicates of "phantom portals"? Even if I won't get Seer credit myself (which I'd obviously prefer), I generally still want the portal to go live. Is there a way to handle these, or are they forever doomed to their current phantom state?

Your move, +NIA Ops. #SeerBadge #Ingress

While you're working through all that, perhaps consider lowering the thresholds for each Seer badge level? I like the tiers on SpecOps: 5 = bronze, 25 = silver, 100 = gold, 200 = platinum, and 500 = onyx. There are a finite number of potential portal candidates in the world, and with the player base constantly growing, this would make the badge more realistically attainable for more agents.

Because it's gotten to the point why have a badge that takes 2 months or more for a response?! They need to just eat crow and either get rid of it or make some serious changes.

So... The MPAA is effectively bribing officials? That seems wrong. Illegal wrong, maybe?

Yet, don't download movies illegally. Because it's ruining them or whatever. (sigh)

Type: Rejected new submission (does not meet portal criteria)
Name: Mike's Barber Shop
https://www.ingress.com/intel?ll=38.592721,-90.528719

This is a unique barbershop, but it's more than just a place to get a haircut. Here, the mostly male clientele talk with each other and with the barbers about a wide variety of topics. It's a place where men can be men. Of course, there's no rule against women coming in, and when they do, people respect them. For these reasons, I believe it qualifies as a portal because it is "a popular spot where locals gather, but may be lesser-known outside the community" and "a local hangout where people gather, talk and spend time together" (quoted from the candidate portal criteria).

...Which is something I've considered on several occasions. The primary thing stopping me is all the work involved.

1) My very first submission/approval: The Immortal Ten Statue. These ten Baylor University basketball players, coaches, and fans tragically died in a bus crash in 1927. Read more here: http://www.baylorbears.com/trads/bay-immortal-10.html

2-3) An exceptionally pretty church. My original submission was on a cloudy day, so the light wasn't too flattering. However, I recently retook the photo on a sunny day, and G+ #AutoAwesome worked its magic.

4) Artists in my metro area have taken to decorating traffic control boxes. I truly appreciate this effort to turn mundane objects that can range between unnoticed and ugly into something truly beautiful. Many have become portals; here's one I successfully submitted. Canada geese are a common seasonal sight where I live. It's best to observe them from a certain distance; they'll hiss at you and may bite if you get too close to them, especially when they have young. I think I noted the artist's name in the description, but I don't have a key to the area currently.
