As we integrate technology into school-wide programming and instruction, it is important we include how to safely and appropriately use digital tools and resources. Infusing digital citizenship skills into all content areas helps students better understand what safe and healthy online behavior looks like. Empathy and compassion are the foundation on which digital citizenship skills are built on. Empathy and compassion also happen to be at the heart of the new Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) competencies created in Wisconsin for schools. Social and emotional learning is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. SEL competencies, when taught in schools, will help students to better understand the effects of their online decisions and lay the groundwork for teaching digital citizenship skills.

Check out the new DPI crosswalk resource for the ITL Standards and Social and Emotional Learning. You also get an introduction to the new SEL competencies as well as how they align with online safety skills and topics.

The survey was conducted voluntarily across the state and includes information from 423 Wisconsin districts (over 95% participation)! The survey website contains the 11 questions believed to be of greatest interest to all stakeholders in Wisconsin available by state, CESA, and district level data.

During a discussion with one of my colleagues, I asked her if she had ever asked her students about why they weren't doing their homework.
