Fan Created Cyphers  -

I've been working on an idea for a cypher.  It's not 100% yet, but I thought I would share what I have to get your input.

The party finds, among other curiosities, a featureless silver mask.  It's humanoid in appearance, but has no holes for the eyes or mouth.  When held in the light, a rainbow oil-slick effect can be seen on the outer surface.  The inside surface appears to have very, very faint symbols etched into it.  (This is where the fun starts).

Whichever player has indicated that they're checking out the mask, you're going to describe what happens next to the other players. They see their friend bring the mask up closer to his face to try and inspect its interior surface.  When it gets about a foot from his face, the mask leaps from his hands and attaches itself firmly to his face, and he falls over backwards and lays there motionless, seemingly dead (although a simple INT check (diff 2) will show that his chest is moving so he's still breathing).  After a few seconds, they will start to smell the faint smell something burning surrounds their friend's head, although he doesn't seem to react at all, and just lays there motionless.

What they do next will determine what the mask does.  It's important to note that the mask cannot be removed at all.  But don't tell them this.  Let them get the idea that they need to remove the mask.  Strongly imply that "something bad" is happening under there.

What's actually happening is that the mask is "installing" a third-eye on their friend's forehead.  This third-eye will have visual abilities beyond what the character already has.  Maybe low-light vision, or the ability to see heat signatures.  Maybe the ability to see in several different spectra.  I'm still working out this part.
The trick is in what the rest of the party does.  The more (little 'e') effort the put into removing the mask (thereby interfering with the procedure), the less "right" it will go.

If they put no effort at all in removing the mask (not likely), the procedure goes off without a hitch.  After a certain amount of time (an hour?  two?), the mask will release from his face and fall to the ground.  When he awakens, he'll just have these new visual abilities that can be used at will and at the same time as his original vision.

If they put forth a medium amount of effort, the procedure finishes and the character has the new visual abilities, but using the "new" eye at the same time as his original ones makes him nauseous, so he has to keep one or the other covered.

If they put forth a lot of effort (multiple people trying to pry the thing off, spending big-E Effort in the attempt), not only does it cause the nauseating effect mention before, but the eye also seems to have a "mind of its own".  Maybe it won't focus where the player wants.  Or blinks rapidly to try and disorient him.

After one use, the mask will appear to be dead and will not repeat the effect.

Like I say, it's still a work in progress, but I thought I would put it out there to get some feedback from the community.

:)

Not really sure.  I guess it's part of "make them really think that mask needs to be removed".  Guess I could do without the roll.

Some may find the Kickstarter interesting, especially given the nature of Numenera combat.

Hey guys,
Have any of the sourcebooks been released in hard back?  Seems like I recall reading that they were going to be, but the only ones I can find are soft cover.
Also, does anyone know where I could buy the Reaper minis?  Their web-site doesn't seem to list them.
Thanks.

In January Monte mentioned they hope to have individual minis available in march, so hopefully they're not far off.

Everybody else is posting pictures of their collections, and I just took this pic for a "what do you want me to bring" email to my group, so I thought I would share it here too.

I'm not a violent man, but if I was going to kill someone, I know how I would do it. Softly, with my song. Or maybe a chainsaw.
Introduction
Google says I should put "a little something about myself here" so people will know they've "found the correct Josef".

You have found "the correct Josef".  Trust me.  Every other Josef is just plain incorrect.
