In that case, the dataLayer will be very useful for you. Additionally, consider event tracking on the search form itself. Normally, I don't like to track the search form on the site as I find it duplicates the Site Search tracking, but in your case it will be useful. Bottom line, the data layer key for internalSearchTerm which only is present after your internal search receives a POST will be the cleanest implementation.
