Great opinion piece on the current state of affairs for immigrant youth under DACA and the Dream Act.  Her perspective officers creative ways to keep the movement going. Make sure to check out her interview on Pacifica Radio KPFK http://voicesfromfrontlines.com/neidi-dominguez-moving-forward-with-a-strong-vision-for-immigrant-justice/

Here's a different use of network analysis that I think is also important. http://civic.mit.edu/blog/erhardt/mapping-the-trayvon-martin-media-controversy  Youth living in high poverty areas do not have a voice. Their stories only get major attention when something bad happens. Seldom do bad news stories point to places in the neighborhood that offer extra learning, tutoring, mentoring, recreation, etc., nor do they call for people to support these programs or help build new programs where too few exist. Thus, if we can find a way to harness media, we can do more to help kids. Here's an example of map-stories that could be created following bad news stories.  http://mappingforjustice.blogspot.com/2014/01/using-maps-and-media-to-draw-resources.html  This is one of the public awareness strategies I've been using since 1993 in my efforts to help tutor/mentor programs grow in all high poverty Chicago neighborhoods.

Wow, sad but true. My solution is too make reading low stakes. Read whatever is interesting to you. Sometimes it may not be a book but, read those too. I try to read a book a month. An hour commute on public transportation helps me reach my goal. I still put in more time just reading online and when a book is extra interesting. ;). How about you?

Read a damn book, people.

How can we educate the hearts of children?" By raising this question, the Dalai Lama challenged us all to enable a generation’s capacities for compassion, empathy and resilience, thereby fueling a common will and determination to pursue and sustain peace among all people. Inspired by the words of His Holiness, UX for Good (uxforgood.com), in partnership with the Dalai Lama Center for Peace and Education (dalailamacenter.org), explored how to embed the social and emotional learning of children and youth in the education system of British Columbia. UX for Good 2013 coincided with the Center’s Heart -Mind Conference in Vancouver, B.C, Canada. Produced by CHISEL Industries (chiselindustries.com).

With the start of the new school year, finally got around to my Make 6. I am introducing connected learning to my students. I went a little old school with a Power Point. I wanted to create a video. For the voiceover I used screencast-o-matic and uploaded to our classroom youtube channel.  I took it a step further and used TEd-ed with the flip this video tool.  You can take any youtube and create a lesson. I will present it to my student using this interface.  Enjoy! #clmooc
