PayPal enjoys a remarkable amount of linguistic pluralism in its programming culture. In addition to the long-standing popularity of C++ and Java, an increasing number of teams are choosing JavaScript and Scala, and Braintree's acquisition has introduced a sophisticated Ruby community.

Very good tutorial.

Whenever I have a classification task with lots of data and lots of features, I love throwing Vowpal Wabbit or VW at the problem. Unfortunately, I find the array of commandline options in vw very intimidating. The github wiki is really good, but the information you need to be productive is scattered all over the place. This is my attempt to put everything you need in one place.
Vowpal Wabbit tutorial for the Uninitiated. by Rob Zinkov on 2013.08.13. Whenever I have a classification task with lots of data and lots of features, I love throwing Vowpal Wabbit or VW at the problem. Unfortunately, I find the array of commandline options in vw very intimidating.

One of my favorite interview questions for engineering candidates is to tell me about one thing they liked and one thing they disliked about the engineering culture at their previous company. Over the course of a few hundred interviews, this interview question has given me a sense of what good engineers look for and what they're trying to avoid. I also reflected back on my own experiences from...

+Marc'Aurelio Ranzato and I gave a tutorial on deep learning at ICML 2013 in Atlanta last Sunday (well,  I did all the talking, but Marc'Aurelio helped with the slides).

I'm told it had the largest crowd of all the ICML tutorials this year. I hope the audience liked it.

The slides are available here: http://www.cs.nyu.edu/~yann/talks/lecun-ranzato-icml2013.pdf

The video will be available from the ICML website sometimes soon.

Thanks to +Peter Stone for organizing the tutorials and for inviting us.
