Don't rely on the media to understand the world.

In this Swedish video professor Hans Rosling explains why and how this is rather vividly to a journalist. It is interesting and funny.

And yes, the idea you get of the world through the media, that it is all getting worse and worse - it isn't an accurate representation of facts. The world is, overall, doing better and better. We're making technical, social, political, economical and environmental progress almost everywhere. Not to say that we shouldn't deal with the problems we have - which are plenty. But it ain't all bleak...

Most fun part: "this isn't something to discuss. I am right and you are wrong" - spot on: many people like to 'discuss facts', like their opinion has any effect on reality...
