In less than a month, my new book – “It’s Complicated: The Social Lives of Networked Teens”  (see: http://www.danah.org/itscomplicated/ ) - will be published.  This is the product of ten years worth of research into how social media has inflected American teen life.  If you’ve followed this blog for a while, you’ve seen me talk about these issues over the years. Well, this book is an attempt to synthesize all of that work into one tangible artifact.

Now I have a favor…. please consider pre-ordering a copy (or two <grin>).  Pre-sales and first week sales really matter in terms of getting people’s attention. And I’m really hoping to get people’s attention with this book. I’ve written it to be publicly accessible in the hopes that parents, educators, journalists, and policy makers will read it and reconsider their attitude towards technology and teen practices.  The book covers everything from addiction, bullying, and online safety to privacy, inequality, and the digital natives debate.

If you have the financial wherewithal to buy a copy, I’d be super grateful.  If you don’t, I totally understand.  Either way, I’d be super super super appreciative if you could help me get the word out about the book. I’m really hoping that this book will alter the public dialogue about teen use of social media.

Elsevier's takedown notices to Harvard.

From +Kim-Mai Cutler at TechCrunch: "[P]owerful universities like Harvard have also developed programs that allow academics to freely and legally publish alternative versions of their research. Peter Suber, who is a director of the Harvard Office for Scholarly Communication, said Harvard had also received a few dozen takedown notices [from Elsevier] in the last few weeks. “If these takedowns anger you, then don’t give your rights to Elsevier. Steer your papers to another publisher,” said Suber, who stressed he was speaking from a personal perspective and not on behalf of the university."

Here are a few extra details. All the takedown notices were for papers posted to faculty web sites. None were for papers in DASH, our OA repository. All were for published editions. None were for the authors' final peer-reviewed manuscripts. For papers covered by the Harvard OA policies, Harvard faculty have a lawful alternative, even for papers published in non-OA journals.

Great post by +Stephen Downes on the 7 things universities are doing wrong.
 
I write today in Half an Hour responding to a story in Inside Higher Ed called Signs of Surrender in Public Higher Ed. John Warner uses as a metaphor the 'surrender' of the press, as follows: "The rationale for Time’s move is that the magazine can now “explore new revenue opportunities,” which is code for the “native advertising” practices utilized at websites like Buzzfeed – which substitutes memes for news - and Politico - which makes no apologies for the fact that its Chief White House Correspondent engages in de facto influence peddling, as amply demonstrated by Erik Wemple at the Washington Post." Fair enough. But he then follows his article with an absurd list of seven signs of surrenter that have nothing to do with the point he just made. So here are seven real signs of surrender in higher ed generally (because, believe me, private higher ed is not immune).

Introduction

I am currently an English teacher at Escola Secundária de Camões. I am also a researcher at the Laboratory of Distance Education and eLearning (LEaD), Universidade Aberta, Portugal. I teach in the eLearning Pedagogy Master’s Program. I participated as a co-author and facilitator in the online teaching training program developed at Universidade Aberta (part of the Innovation Program in Distance Education], with courses both for Universidade Aberta’s professors and tutors, and for other Portuguese universities as well. 

My master’s dissertation, “From Web 2.0 to eLearning 2.0: Learning in the Network” is available in an online, rich-media version @ http://orfeu.org/weblearning20 (only Portuguese, but there’s an abstract in English).

My research interests include personal learning environments (PLEs), connectivism and networked learning. On a more broad perspective I’m interested in learning, cyberculture, edutech, literature, music, people and writing.
