The Department of State urges U.S. citizens to avoid all travel to Your Mother’s House until you have found a full-time job with health and dental, and advises travelers to carefully consider the risks of visiting Your Mother’s House with yet another boyfriend who doesn’t have the common sense to tuck his shirt into his pants. This Travel Warning replaces the prior advisory issued in March 2009, which you clearly disregarded, to at least consider...

Damn you for having free reservations now, Savored! How am I supposed to resist new restaurants now?
Savored is a free way to make online reservations and pay lower prices at great restaurants.

Austrian food is something of a rarity in Manhattan. Good Austrian food is even scarcer still. But one spoonful of the goulash at Cafe Katja will prove its existence outside the walls of Wallsé. Be forewarned, however; between the immense portions, heaviness of the fare, and dark beers, this is not a restaurant for the faint of heart.

The pizza isn't world-beating, but it's dependable. The same could be said for the pasta. The main draw is the affordability and the buzzy atmosphere, as confirmed and perpetuated by the gobs of NYU students packing the place. If you're keeping to a relatively trim budget with friends, there are worse places in which to do it.

Decent dim sum for Manhattan, but that isn't saying much. Getting into the restaurant is an experience in and of itself. You enter a nondescript office building to wait in a lobby filled with fobs, brave tourists, and people pretending not to be fobs. You get a number from the hostess in the ill-fitting decaying eggplant colored jacket, and wait for 45 minutes while numbers are called almost entirely at random. You then walk up a narrow staircase into a different sort of pandemonium, as carts are wheeled between tables while people with no regard for the fragile order storm the more desirable ones as you're ushered into a table filled with other patrons who match your general ethnicity. The dim sum has gotten worse over the years, as evidenced both by the fading pictures of Zagat ratings framed around in a small corner of the room and by the many carts going relatively untouched. It isn't terrible, but it's not a place you tell your friends you've been to show some sort of misguided exoticization cred. It's average dim sum with high comedic value; no more, no less.

My God, is it dim in here. There's a fine line to be toed between sexy ambient lighting and 'your fork is in my forearm' and this place veers towards the latter. Which is unfortunate, because the food should be seen, considering it looks nearly as good as it tastes. The pastas are impeccable, the tajarin carbonara and lamb ragu gnocchi in particular. The entrées are not quite as exemplary, but the pollo al diavolo and braised short ribs are very good. So bring a date who loves Italian food, but be sure they have strong night vision.

If you haven't had Belgian style fries, do yourself a favor and try them here. Just don't go at anytime after 8pm on any day after Wednesday. In other words, don't go at a time when people will have been drinking, because nothing puts a damper on fries like dealing with forty drunk idiots all also trying to get fries. And while the poutine sounds tempting, the gravy is fairly lackluster, so avoid that too.

Small? Yes. Cash-only? Yes. Hip? No, not particularly. Still, two for three ain't bad, Zagat. It's like a trip to your nonna's, only without all the nasally cries of "eyyy, nonnaaaa, good to see yaaa" every time someone enters the room. The food is soulful and comforting, the portions are likely akin to whatever your nonna doled out, and is priced at nonna levels. Who cares if it isn't hip?

How this restaurant does not receive more publicity is beyond me. The frequency and fervor with which West Village restaurants open means that true gems, such as Market Table, can become lost in the shuffle. I had an anniversary dinner here, and every dish we had was wonderful; from the gem salad to the striploin. The service is insightful, warm, and adept. The guest book that patrons sign at the end of meals is unendurably adorable. A meal at Market Table is one of the dwindling instances that remind you that New York doesn't always have to be an island of trash stacked with dillholes in glass boxes. Sometimes, it can be downright enchanting.
