Current Events:

I am currently researching "full motion" -- the tracking of the player's body as an input device -- as a way to advance hardware-based immersion in gaming. My current focus is "Development of Full Motion Natural User Interfaces via Combination of Graphic and Haptic Interfaces". My research blog can be found at

My Background:

I have known since I was a small child that I was meant to be a game designer, and have modeled my lifestyle to this goal. I have a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science degree at Texas State University. My design blog can be found at

I run a simple and sane community for game developers at Tao.VG.

I also have a website in the works that focuses on bottom-up community-based game reviews. Progress on that can be found at its web development blog

In addition to my other interests, I create YouTube gameplay videos called "Let's Plays". I'm currently working on Shadow of the Colossus.

My Quotes:

"The first rule of
war should be not to have one." -- me

"Everyone has a reason, but not everyone has reason." -- me

"They who live by fear shall die by fear." -- me

"Those who do not make their destiny welcome

you don't take charge of your life, your life will take charge of you." -- me

"If a character
lacks depth, what is he? Better that a man be as deep as the ocean, that others might eventually venture into its depths instead of merely sailing on its surface." -- me

"Better a slave in hell than a drone in heaven." -- me

"The first rule of combat is
anything and everything can be a weapon." -- me

"I am but a shimmering
silver in a world of grays." -- me

"Some people think the trick to writing good characters is to pour yourself into them, but doing so usually leads to disaster. No, the trick is to let your characters pour from you." -- me

My Favorite Quotes (by other people):

“Don't keep forever on the public road, going only where others have gone, and following one after the other like a flock of sheep. Leave the beaten track occasionally and dive into the woods. 'Every time you do so you will be certain to find something that you have never seen before. Of course it will be a little thing, but do not ignore it. Follow it up, explore all around it; one discovery will lead to another, and before you know it you will have something worth thinking about to occupy your mind. All really big discoveries are the results of thought.” -- Alexander Graham Bell

"Anyone can dabble, but once you've made that commitment, your blood has that particular thing in it, and it's very hard for people to stop you." -- Bill Cosby

"People ask me to prove that games are art. I ask them to prove they're not." -- Ron Gilbert

"I can never know, see, and understand. I can only know, see, and understand more." -- Douglas Sharper

"Look, all I know is what they taught me at command school. There are certain rules about a war and rule number one is young men die. And rule number two is doctors can't change rule number one." -- Henry Blake

"Frank, you know what a hero is? 99 times out of 100 he's somebody who's tired enough and cold enough and hungry enough not to give a damn. I don't give a damn. Come on." -- Hawkeye Pierce

"War isn't Hell. War is war, and Hell is Hell. And of the two, war is a lot worse... There are no innocent bystanders in Hell. War is chalk full of them - little kids, cripples, old ladies. In fact, except for some of the brass, almost everybody involved is an innocent bystander." -- Hawkeye Pierce

"Maturity is knowing you were an idiot in the past. Wisdom is knowing you'll be an idiot in the future. Common sense is knowing you should try not to be an idiot NOW." -- Questionable Content

"Game pirates are almost like muggers. Just hand over the goods, and nobody gets hurt." -- Mike Fahey

"A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it. Fifteen hundred years ago everybody knew the Earth was the center of the universe. Five hundred years ago, everybody knew the Earth was flat... ...Imagine what you'll know tomorrow." -- Kay

"War does not determine who is right. War determines who is left." -- unknown

"POW? Aren't they ALL POWs? I mean, they can't very well turn around and leave." -- unknown

Open up the song's lyrics in another window and watch this video again. There's a lot of significance you don't get from just one or the other. The song is about how the U.S. conducts its foreign policy at home.

There are 16 military wives and 17 company men. 5 of the company men die at war, their deaths marked only by the letters of a sergeant home to those 5 wives.

(The chorus is about how the U.S. essentially de-facto rules the world and can't ever say no to war, meanwhile the infotainment-centric mainstream media puts their fingers in their ears about these atrocities. It's important to note the significance of the chorus being repeated after each verse.)

15 celebrity minds, spoiled by their fortune, talk a big talk about a solution to the crisis. Despite their "moderate liberal" mindset, they can't be bothered to put in the real work needed.

18 academy chairs (probably referring to the United Nations), only 7 of which care about the world at large, meaninglessly laud the words of 5 "humble" celebrity minds instead of putting in the real work needed to solve the crisis themselves.

14 cannibal kings (probably referring to warlords, tyrants, and the ultra-rich) reap the greatest benefits from the suffering, happy in the impotence of the 15 celebrity minds and 16 military wives.
I built this in SketchUp. It's not quite done yet, but it was easy to make as SketchUp is an extremely intuitive tool. Plus, the PlayUp plugin allows you to export things you make in it as objects for modern game engines.

People who do not play video games, nor understand what they really are, are always the first to demand its head on a plate whenever something goes violently wrong. The problem with this philosophy is that if video games were really the cause of violent behaviors, the world would already be a wasteland of death and destruction. Yet oddly enough it isn’t. In my experiences, the only aggressions I’ve seen that stem from video games are caused by ei...

Morphball unnecessary? No. The spring ball powerup (although usually seen in late-game if at all) entirely justifies the existence of the morph ball from a physical standpoint because a human can't get the kind of leverage needed from a crawling position to leap as high as your normal standing jump height, even if you're Samus Aran without your power suit (as seen in Zero Mission). I can see a massive amount of usefulness out of the ability to be that contorted but also have the leverage needed to launch yourself that high.

Combine that with (at least in the 3D games) the fact that you can force yourself to roll against otherwise-impossible inclines through enforced friction (i.e. your tires don't just spin in the mud) and you're defying the laws of physics now, which is awesome.
This article is epic!
