This jewellery box is made from a wood called Satin walnut. It has a great tight grain pattern.

This and other boxes can be seen at The Contemporary Craft Fair, this week, in Bovey Tracey.

Have done a bit of work on my furniture website. Now both my furniture and jewellery boxes website have the same look-and-feel.

I must have raised and lowered that platens on this veneer press about 50 times over the past two day.  I could imagine it being a good workout for Roman galley slaves!

What was I doing that warranted all this raising and lowering?  Well first of all I was flattening some burr veneers, then gluing them to the panels of MDF.

It is great having access to a table saw that has digital rise/fall and blade angle. Helps make life that little bit easier.

I have just been gluing up a couple of boxes, and I have read in various places about a really really simple jig that can help ensure that the box ends up square.

Sometime just using clamps, you can take an item out of square if one of the clamps is putting pressure not quite in line with the joint.

So I decided to make my own version of the jig and see how it performs.

Made from 22mm thick MDF it is basically a corner which is exactly 90 degrees, and sides 100% vertical - the first picture show this 'corner'.

To use, just put the box in the jig and clamps across. Use clamping cauls to ever the pressure on the box and stop denting. The clamps will pull the joints tight, and pull the box into the corner. So in theory, the box should end up square.

And they did glue up square!

When the boxes are complete, I will load some picture to my Handmade box website.
