If the plane went for the closest airport, and you disregard Malaysian "active military radar" data as being MH370, then it makes total sense that autopilot would might have engaged a southern course between 220 - 190 or so, which eventually took MH370 towards the southern Indian Ocean.
Magnetic variance then came into play, giving you the impression that it was a direct southern route.
The only thing that doesn't make much sense is at what flight level it took after missing the airport and fuel consumption, and the crazy Malaysian radar data.
