Facebook's increasing control of internet traffic, ad revenue, mobile usage, and access to news and media outlets. Another interesting analysis from The Atlantic.

Hi folks - after a recent stairwell discussion, I thought I might add some exploration tips I've discovered so far here.

1. USE YOUR MAP, LUKE

Go into your galaxy map View tab, and change "Show by colour" to "Star class." This will help with several things. Firstly, we're not in Kansas any more, there's no economies and trade routes. Out here, star class is far more useful. Secondly, we can now de-select the brown dwarf star classes that we can't scoop fuel from. Thirdly, if you want to go for gold (water worlds and Earth-like planets), I can't help noticing that they mostly tend to be orbiting single stars of Class F, K, and G. You can now easily zero-in on these systems.

2. MULTIPLE STAR SYSTEMS

If you switch to the Info tab, you can hover the mouse on a star system, and the class data will appear for each star in the system. In this example, we have K8 VA, M7 VA, L3 V which indicates a triple star system. Each class is a letter for the H-R diagram class (OBAFGKM main sequence, LYT dwarfs, etc.), followed by a digit (0-9 from hotter to cooler), and a roman numeral for the luminosity, or roughly, size (I for supergiants, V for main sequence, VI dwarfs, etc.)

3. AVOID BLOWING UP

Don't frameshift into a system and get stuck between two giant stars very close together, or you might overheat and die, and lose all that exploration data. Switch the view to Realistic, and have a look at where the stars are, before you frameshift in.

Come to Lugh and join the community goal to spread democracy and righteousness throughout the system. Easy credits! See capital ships frameshifting in and kicking arse! Kit out a cheap Cobra or Viper, join a faction and get your combat rank up!

Just spent a couple of hours kicking around Lugh in a wing with a couple of other guys. Some lag issues at home, but we managed to do fairly creditably in convoy bashing with a Viper, Vulture and Eagle.

Group combat is definitely different from a 1:1 dogfight - definitely more options for zoom-and-boom tactics rather than setting your power levels based on how manoeuvrable the opponent is and trying to keep my beams on them.

Got to head off to the office now (catchup for being comedically late on Friday due to car mishaps), but I've comfortably earned my Viper a new set of thrusters :-)

I blogged a feijoa jam recipe.
http://jon.geek.nz/2015/04/feijoa-jam/
Here's the recipe for 10 kg of feijoa jam. 6 kg feijoas 500 g stewed apple 300 ml lime juice extra hot water 4 kg sugar Lots of jam jars Halve or quarter (depending how keen you're feeling) the feijoas into a very large pot. Don't peel them or scoop them - use the whole fruit.

Just under 12 litres (2½ gallons) of jalapeño sauce. I can't feel my fingers.

Cheeky combat Viper: composite hull; A reactor, thrusters, distributor; D everything else to save weight; pulse and beam lasers, all gimballed. No ammo required.

The gimballed beam lasers do most of the damage.

Commander: Doctor Lard
Ship: Cobra Mk III, Lakon Type 6 for trading
Location: running the LTT 15278 - Mjolnir route
Occupation: Trader/Explorer

Trucking goods in the Type 6 to get enough credits to kit the Cobra out for exploring. Full kit is jolly expensive. Also enjoy mining, but hanging out for wings to go mining in teams (two miners, one scooper with heaps of cargo space, one look-out). Used to play the original Elite on the BBC Micro at school.
