When I go into my darkroom I get carried away, I sometimes almost need stopping because I see darkness as my voice really. I am speaking for the victims and the casualties of war because some of them are not around to speak for themselves and in war you see a lot of damaged human beings, they can’t talk, because they’re in immense depths of shock and horror so when I make my pictures I make them dark so that they speak for what these other people can’t speak.

From most of her grandparents losing their lives in Auschwitz, to her and her parents being on a plane out of Tel Aviv that got hijacked in 1976, it's more than a normal miracle that Anne Neuberger is around today.

Now she works for the NSA, and that makes for very interesting listening material.

The NSA’s failures are public headlines. Its successes are secret. These days America’s National Security Agency lives at the intersection of two paranoias—governmental fears of attack and citizen fears about loss of privacy. Both paranoias were exacerbated by a pair of devastating attacks—9/11 and Edward Snowden. The agency now has to evolve rapidly while managing its normal heavy traffic of threats and staying ahead of the ever-accelerating fro...
