At the foodie fest food truck gathering today. Yesterday I sold a bunch of stuff at the garage sale to save money for the move. So today, in true Jon fashion, I spent a bunch of it on pricey hipster food. So good. The Korean pork and kale tacos were the winner here for me. Quite delicious. Sadly the promised "beer garden" turned out to be an InBev nightmare. Come on people..... Don't pull this crap in San Diego.

We had a festival that gave the local brewers space then this year the distributor got to sell his three brews. People were not happy.

I took this photo in 2004 at the Bodie ghost town in California. It was sort of an afterthought to go there, as the real purpose of the trip was to photographing Yosemite. I ended up deciding to hit this place on the drive back home. I really wish I'd been able to spend more time here, and I'm sure I'll head back some day to do that.

Bodie is one of those things I really fear for in America. As a nation we seem to have so little respect and history and pride in seeing things just left alone. We always have to mess with stuff. It would be so easy for some drunk asshole to just ruin the whole thing. Hopefully it's far enough off the beaten path that drunk assholes will never find it. Or maybe I'm just too much of bitter cynic.

At any rate.... Bodie is truly magical.

One of the reasons I love this photo is it's use on Wikipedia. It's nice to know others think the photo is not just artistically good, but is also a great objective representation of the town itself. I didn't get to spend enough time here, but I did get this nice photo, and others value it, and that makes me happy.

This is a GREAT photo to represent Bodie. I went there several times as a child, and I had the pleasure of taking the kids just this last year. I'm glad it's off the beaten path, but I also wish more people knew about - and appreciated - it. It's easy to lose perspective when we don't grasp history. (And it wasn't even that long ago since Bodie was a thriving town.)

I took this photo in 2004 in Balboa park. It was a gloomy day where my objective of getting some nice architecture and flower photos was pretty much quashed by dark clouds. Sure, I can still walk around and take nice photos, but any others i take later when the sun is out will be much better. So why bother....

But this shot really came together. The cool indirect light accentuates the colors rather than muting them. Somehow. And the contrast and color balance seems so magical. Sure, the image is over processed. But I really think that works well here.

If you see me out taking picture of things, especially plants, you'll notice I frequently just stand and stare a one flower for awhile, then stare at another, then another. I'm trying to form a photo just like this one - Perfect foreground, midground, background. Lots of contrast. Good framing potential. The cut off branch on the far right is unfortunate, but this whole photo is really about that one flower in the center left. I frequently stare at things just looking for that - one square centimeter that ties the whole photo together.

Love this quote - "The cost of living up to your convictions needs to be born by you, not by others. Being true to your religious values requires sacrifice on your part. Its not a price to be paid by the public. "

Christian's Failure of Courage
Dear Christians: I know you are earnest in your faith. So were the martyrs of the early church. They died for their faith. What sacrifice are you willing to make for yours?

Too many contemporary Christians are asking some members of the public to sacrifice their right to services otherwise provided to everyone else. How does discrimination affirm Christian values? If serving all members of the public violates your faith, and if you truly have the courage of your convictions, then you need to find some other line of work.

If you have a lunch counter serving the public, of which the Black community is a part, and your faith prohibits you from serving them, you are in the wrong business.

If you are a legislator involved in the governance of the public, of which the Black community is a part, and your religion prohibits you from allowing integration or interracial marriage, you are in the wrong business.

If you are a pharmacist  providing your services to the public, of which women are the majority, and your faith prohibits you from filling a prescription for contraception, you are in the wrong business.

If you are a baker selling your products to the public, of which the LGBT community is a part, and your religion prohibits you from serving that community, you are in the wrong business.

If you are a photographer providing your services to the public, of which the LGBT community is a part, and your religion prohibits you from serving that community, you are in the wrong business.

Complaining about how not letting you discriminate is discrimination is, quite honestly, the act of a coward. Show that you have the courage of your convictions. Get another job.

The fact is this. The cost of living up to your convictions needs to be born by you, not by others. Being true to your religious values requires sacrifice on your part. Its not a price to be paid by the public.

Sure, it's a big corporate chain. But the tacos are still legit. Better can be had from the trucks and mom&pop places if you can track them down, but there should be no shame in just heading to King Taco.

This place seems to be much more about reputation than good tacos. Not bad, but also not worth the inflated prices. I don't mind waiting in line for great food, but this wasn't it. Better tacos can be found all over SoCal for half as much, with no line.
