Only third Montana? Time to man up.

Cheers! - It's National Beer Day  April 7, 2014

Beer trivia from Mental Floss:

Today is National Beer Day! If you're out with friends and run out of things to talk about, here are some beer facts from the @mental_floss Twitter account.

2. The Code of Hammurabi decreed that bartenders who watered down beer would be executed.

3. At the Wife Carrying World Championships, first prize is the wife's weight in beer.

4. A cloud near the constellation Aquila contains enough ethyl alcohol to fill 400 trillion trillion pints of beer.  (edit: some of us debated if this was methyl alcohol the other day, but seem it is indeed ethyl)

5. Coined in the early 1900s, the word "alcoholiday" means leisure time spent drinking.

6. The builders of the Great Pyramid of Giza were paid with a daily ration of beer.

8. Fried beer won Most Creative Fried Food at the 2010 Texas State Fair.

9. The top five states for beer consumption per capita: 1. North Dakota, 2. New Hampshire, 3. Montana, 4. South Dakota 5. Wisconsin.

10. Germany is home to a beer pipeline. Taps in Veltsin-Arena are connected by a 5km tube of beer.

11. Thomas Jefferson wrote parts of the Declaration of Independence in a Philadelphia tavern.

12. Cenosillicaphobia is the fear of an empty glass.

13. At the end of Prohibition, FDR said, "What America needs now is a drink."

14. Winston Churchill called the concept of Prohibition "an affront to the whole history of mankind."

15. George Washington insisted his continental army be permitted a quart of beer as part of their daily rations.

16. Oktoberfest originally started as a festival celebrating the 1810 marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig.

17. At spas in Europe, you can literally bathe in beer as a physical and mental therapeutic treatment.

18. In the 1990s, the Beer Lovers Party ran candidates in Belarus and Russia.

19. J.K. Rowling invented Quidditch in a pub.

20. Beer helped Joseph Priestly discover oxygen. He noticed gases rising from the big vats of beer at a brewery and asked to do some experiments.

21. A Buddhist temple in the Thai countryside was built with over a million recycled beer bottles.

22. The moon has a crater named Beer.

23. Beer soup was a common breakfast in medieval Europe.

24. At the start of Bavarian Beer Week in Germany, an open-air beer fountain dispenses free beer to the public.

25. In the 1980s, a beer-drinking goat was elected mayor of Lajitas, TX.

Random photos I haven't posted yet. +Churchill's Pub & Grille  (food not as good the second visit), Bull's Smoking BBQ (over cooked but damn good), +Sublime Tavern  (don't order the artichoke). And of course lots of beer. Should I feel bad that I made Marilee move to San Diego, and then all we do is hang out in bars?

Finally made it to Sab-E-Lee last night. Quite good. Need to go back and try some other things. The chicken larb pictured below was very good. Sweetness said the spicy salmon fried rice was just average.

More to-do list. Damn it....... Dieting and food blogs do not make a good combination. And I must say, after complaining about the San Diego food "scene" for years, it's nice to finally be able to talk about it without the quotes. We have a food scene now, not a food "scene".

Don't move to San Diego. You'll be attacked by lemurs.
http://www.ejeats.com/dont-move-to-san-diego/

The article at the link above nails it. San Diego is pretty hard to not sink into like a great comfy chair. It just feels comfortable. Sure, we don't have the depth of culture like San Francisco or New Orleans, since we're so young as a city. But....it's not always too cold or always too hot. We don't have the  intense concentration of everything imaginable like LA or NYC. But then we actually drive here without feeling like our lives have merged into a massive traffic jam.

And the article does miss several of my favorites. We're the best place to drink beer, period. Mariscos taco trucks. Great burgers in every category imaginable. And though the article did mention it, it should be mentioned twice - Sunny and 75 all year long, usually with a slight cool breeze.

What's bad about San Diego? It's too spread out, more like a region than a city. Out football team is a constant source of disappointment. The police have a tendency to shoot people rather a lot. Since we're in a desert, nothing grows here unless you pour water on it constantly, and we have no water.

Great little taco shop inside.

Sure, it's a big corporate chain. But the tacos are still legit. Better can be had from the trucks and mom&pop places if you can track them down, but there should be no shame in just heading to King Taco.

This place seems to be much more about reputation than good tacos. Not bad, but also not worth the inflated prices. I don't mind waiting in line for great food, but this wasn't it. Better tacos can be found all over SoCal for half as much, with no line.
