I'm libertarian, and I support Bernie Sanders.  Here's why.

Those who pay attention to my posts and comments know I'm a Thoreau/Emerson-style autarchist and crypto-anarchist.  I think Sanders is the best candidate running for President.  And I don't feel any cognitive dissonance between those two statements.

The current state of crony capitalism is about as far from the free market as pure socialism.  The democratic socialism proposed by Sanders and his plans to reduce the power and influence of Wall Street and the ultra-rich in our economy and politics would actually be a big improvement from a libertarian perspective.  And his positions on social issues line up nicely with libertarian ideals of individual freedom and equality.

The mainstream news media has recently made quite a bit of a(n out of context) quote from Sanders saying "We will raise taxes, yes we will".  And he would.  But what few of them are pointing out is that those increased taxes would only apply to people who make over $400,000 a year.  (Incidentally, like the people who own and run the mainstream media outlets.)  https://i.imgur.com/drfyv82.png  Given that his universal healthcare system would eliminate the need to pay for private health insurance, this would save most people quite a bit of money.  And even that universal healthcare system shouldn't scare free-market loving libertarians, since while the government would be paying for citizens' healthcare, it wouldn't be taking over the healthcare system itself.  Private healthcare providers would still exist, competing for customers in a free market.

And that's the thing people who don't bother reading past the word "socialism" don't understand about democratic socialism, especially Sanders' take on it.  He favors programs that provide people with economic freedom within an actual free market.  Here's a quote from a speech he gave back in November:

"So the next time you hear me attacked as a socialist, remember this:

I don’t believe government should own the means of production, but I do believe that the middle class and the working families who produce the wealth of America deserve a fair deal.

I believe in private companies that thrive and invest and grow in America instead of shipping jobs and profits overseas.

I believe that most Americans can pay lower taxes – if hedge fund managers who make billions manipulating the marketplace finally pay the taxes they should.

I don’t believe in special treatment for the top 1%, but I do believe in equal treatment for African-Americans who are right to proclaim the moral principle that Black Lives Matter.

I despise appeals to nativism and prejudice, and I do believe in immigration reform that gives Hispanics and others a pathway to citizenship and a better life.

I don’t believe in some foreign “ism”, but I believe deeply in American idealism."

Except for Rand Paul, all of the GOP candidates stand for larger and more oppressive government in one way or another, and promote themselves by leveraging voters' fears.  Sanders, on the other hand, speaks with hope and idealism.  He wants to end the crony capitalism that's currently the greatest obstacle to the free market espoused by libertarians.   And unlike Paul, he actually has a really good chance of winning if people would only get out and vote.  Yes, he's a socialist, but a kind of socialist that this libertarian can get behind.
He's making it little more than what a liberal Democrat thinks, which isn't so scary.
