I just launched the site for my upcoming book. It's a low-volume blog about how to have a healthy relationship with technology.
In Real Life: Searching for Connection in High-Tech Times. A book and blog about technology and spirituality by Jon Mitchell, Los Angeles-based writer and musician.

I found an app that's helping me balance religious life and web-worker life. This post touches on some of the themes of the latter half of In Real Life, so I'll be writing more about this in the coming weeks and months.
Since I arrived in LA, I’ve started a more religious life, and it has been hard to reconcile that with the lifestyle of a remote web worker. I’ve always had trouble making time for meditation practice in a flexible work schedule, and now I’ve added daily prayer into the mix. What I need — what I’ve always needed — is to impose my own comprehensive schedule and stick to it. I work better with deadlines and rituals in place. I’ve never...

For months, and especially after moving to LA, this idea has been bubbling up in my mind to declare a Reading Year™. My month-New Year celebration — from Burning Man to Rosh Hashanah — is coming up, so it’s perfect timing.
There’s a factory in my mind that never shuts down. The machines never stop running. The workers never go home. The trucks only stop to load in a frenzy, and then they speed off. This factory makes Projects™. It wasn’t always so busy, but it tooled up to meet perceived demand. Half of the Projects™ never make it past headquarters, but the CEO is nervous enough that his methods are becoming unsound. The news in my mind never stops tal...

If +Google Drive got Markdown support, or even just .txt files, I would wear sensors and let Google track everything I do for the rest of my life.

Not going to help you on iOS but this might work for the Web. Came across it a little while back when I was looking for something like this myself: http://dillinger.io/

Are you a WordPress developer and a Burner at the same time? The new Burning Man website needs your help!

We need an extension that enables this:

1. We paste URL into dashboard somewhere
2. It grabs the page's Open Graph title, image, and description (or scrapes a best guess if there are no tags)
3. It converts that stuff into a linked list-style post in WordPress where clicking the title goes to that URL

Does it exist? Can you build it? The inventor of this technology will have their work implemented on the Burning Man website.

Email jon.mitchell@burningman.com if you can help!

Grateful to Utne Reader for offering to publish this excerpt from my new book, In Real Life: Searching for Connection in High-Tech Times.
A burgeoning collection of commuication technologies is often blamed for decreased empathy and attention spans. What if the problem lies not with the technology, but with the attitude of the user?

A story about the danger of dudes at Burning Man, myself included.
You know what? I fucked up. I told her, “Don't worry about your bike.” I honestly thought we'd be able to keep our eye on it. But come on, brother. It was the middle of nowhere out there, and I know better. Still, seriously, what the fuck, right? Don't take the material advice of some ...

What it was like to try on religious life at Burning Man.
Burning Man prepared me for Jewish life as a Burner, but I have more work to do before I’m prepared for Burner life as a Jew.

A plea to spare religion from the evils of politics.
It is my policy not to discuss Israel and Palestine on the Internet. The weaponized, propaganda-tipped arguments of foreigners are one of the many brutal classes of weapon employed in the Middle East conflict. I am a conscientious objector. After a blood relative called me a vicious name during the last escalation of conflict, I don’t participate in that anymore. Moreover, my partner is entering the Conservative rabbinate, so I have ...

What my civilization did and did not teach me about how to be whole.
After absorbing this dharma talk: Kim Allen, “Resolve” It makes me sad that I never learned useful techniques for introspection until I encountered Buddhism. Where was my civilization when I needed it? I’m getting to be a pretty religious Jewish person by now. That tradition teaches me where I’m coming from generation by generation. But I haven’t learned from it where I’m coming from moment by moment. The secular school in which I ...

I get to work on one of my favorite things in the world!
In February, I started a multi-month contract with Burning Man as a content strategist. It’s my first all-in gig with Ablaze Interactions, which is a great feeling, and it’ll keep a roof over my head while I work on my book. But even better, after volunteering on the Burning Blog for three years, this is my first chance to pour a big chunk of time and effort into Burning Man, which is one of my favorite things in the world. I first a...
