+Matt Kantor created an amazing 22 course meal and got featured in Toronto Life! Congrats Matt!

So, a bunch of us were wondering what this google+ "huddle" feature is all about. Today I was working on my boating safety license and found out. Apparently it is good for morale.

You'd think Guy Left would be a little happier given how he started out. Then again one of these guys just did something that landed the others in the water. Probably two of the guys are thinking about the tauntaun in Empire Strikes Back.

Very interesting management document from Netflix. Despite being 129 slides, it is a quick read and is surprisingly candid. Are you working for a company that follows any of these practices? I've been lucky enough to work at several good software companies that had elements of many of these goals, but this document sets the bar for management values at an excellent tech company.

Excellent charts showing the progress of creativity and increasing process rigidity over time on slides 44-49

The bare bone basics of being a good manager 76-85

The whole thing is worth it though.

During this ostentatious first moment on Google+, I'd like to coin a new term: "solocializing".

On a ride from Port Townsend, WA to San Diego, CA we stopped in with a number of issues (tires, bottom bracket adjustment, seat post issue). The mechanic was excellent and the prices were reasonable. I would highly recommend this as a bike shop.

Reserved a subcompact car via expedia. Showed up and quickly received a Ford Fiesta that got awesome gas mileage. Drove the car for a week and returned it without any hassles. The price was very reasonable.

Unless you are dealing with a serious breakdown, I would pass this place by. While on a trip from Vancouver BC to San Diego, we went into Escape Hatch needing a single spoke replaced on a back wheel. The young guy said it would be $2 for the spoke and a couple of bucks more for labor. The wheel was true and the spoke nipple for the broken spoke was usable, so this seemed perfectly reasonable. Then the young guy said we would have to wait for another guy to show up. When the older guy showed up, probably the owner, the tire is suddenly off the rim, the spoke nipple is lost in the double walled rim, the old rubber rim tape is ripped and he wants to replace it. The one spoke ended up being $23.95. This included the spoke, overpriced rim tape and the labor which included truing the wheel, which he didn’t talk to us about and we hadn’t asked for. We never saw the rim in a truing stand. Talking with him about all of this didn’t help. He kept saying that it was a very reasonable price for truing the wheel and I kept saying we didn’t want the wheel trued. It was a bizarre interaction. While we had been waiting for the work to start, we had picked out several tools and a set of pedals we wanted to buy, all adding up to about $60 worth of stuff. We had every intention of paying a good amount of money when we entered the store, but ended putting all of the items back and I made it clear to him that this was because of the overcharge on the spoke work. If you want a decent REI like selection of overpriced outdoor stuff, this store might be your place. For bikes, it is well stocked with parts, so if your bike is in trouble, take your chances. If you are biking South we would recommend Back Country Bicycles in Crescent City, CA If you are biking North we would recommend Moe’s Bike Shop in North Bend, OR Both are excellent shops.
