Just now a few of them really are using flipped learning with mastery skills, but not all. As is something new for them I think as they learn how to learn in this way they will become masters of flipp.
But the students need time.
Jon is a teacher,educational coach, and writer who has had the privilege of helping educators “turn learning on its head.”
Jon, along with Aaron Sams, is considered a pioneer in the Flipped Class Movement. Jon believes educators should ask one guiding question: What is best for the students in my classroom? To the best of his abilities, he has done this in his 26 years as an educator.
He spent 24 years as a middle and high school science teacher before becoming the lead technology facilitator for a school district in the Chicago suburbs.
In 2002, Jon received the Presidential Award for Excellence for Math and Science Teaching; and in 2010, he was named Semi-Finalist for Colorado Teacher of the Year. He serves on the advisory board for TED-Education. In 2013 he, along with Aaron Sams was one of Tech & Learning’s 10 Most Influential of 2013. He serves on the advisory board for TED-Education.
Jon is the father of three amazing young people and is happily married to the love of his life.
What Jon is Doing Now
Currently, Jon helps educators and corporations turn learning on its head by bringing flipped learning into schools and organizations. He continues to write about education both on his blog and in books. He co-wrote the book, Flip Your Classroom: Reach Every Student in Every Class Every Day with Aaron Sams. The book is jointly published by ISTE (International Society for Technology in Education) and ASCD (Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development). Their second book will be released sometime in 2014. Jon is also the author (or co-author) for a variety of educational publications.
Jon also contributes to a popular YouTube channel, which contains videos he has used with his students in the flipped classroom. The videos are mostly chemistry, astronomy, and space science videos.He has keynoted at many conferences, including BETT 2013, the Fall CUE 2012, Wisconsin Academic Forum, Numerous Flipped Learning Network Events, FlipCon 1-6, Learning Technologies MENA (Dubai), and a variety of other events. In addition, Jon has worked for private schools, public schools, small schools, large schools, and school districts. He has spoken to college professors at the University of Nebraska (Kearney), University of Texas-Brownsville, pre-service teachers at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and Illinois State University. Jon has also worked with industry organizations, including the Professional Convention Management Association (PCMA) and the Association for Continuing Legal Education (ACLEA). He also works as an instructional coach for small groups of teachers.
