Introduction
Jonathan Bates is a veteran Creative Director, User Experience Architect, User Interaction Specialist + Visual Designer.

With more than 15 years experience in strategic product ideation and virtually every form of content development, Jon Bates builds dynamic online experiences that deliver measurable, quantifiable results + significant return-on-investment to my clients, which include some of the biggest + most recognizable brands in the world.

MY APPROACH:

What problem are we solving, and how will we measure the solution's success?
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .  . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

When I evaluate any project, whether for a client or employer, the creative aspect is the last thing on my mind: to make great products, fully understanding the immediate and long-term goals of the project are only the first step toward what constitutes success by my standards.

For a project to demonstrate excellence, it must not only seamlessly integrate with existing back-end systems and remain intuitive for legacy users to utilize.

It is essential to keep an eye to the future:
  • All aspects of the site must be extensible, so that the growth of the business is never hampered by the architecture of the online presence; business requirements must always shape the online product.

  • Third party technologies (social media, sharing tools, feeds) should be well-integrated, but in a way that allows what's popular today to be easily replaced by the inevitable new preferred platforms to come.

  • I relentlessly promote visual elegance and innovation in what I do, but never at the expense of limiting audience reach. Product architecture must ensure ubiquity across OS platforms, browsers (and browser releases), connected devices (smartphones, tablets, wearables, Internet appliances) and adopted standards (HTML, HTML5, and so on).

If creating a cutting edge visual or product experience requires a plug-in, download or is restricted from use for a significant number of potential visitors, a simpler experience with greater reach will be my choice always.

60 Minutes Disco Music Story - Studio 54: http://youtu.be/s7j8nQ2C-1M

Watch Dan Rather tell America about a new craze called "disco", where people stand outside cavernous spaces for hours, hoping to make their way in by being "on the list."

Rather then drops the bombshell: " For those inside, they drink and dance... to loud, exotic music. Strangely, no band or musical act is performing on Studio 54's ample stage. The discotheque is all about prerecorded music, playing a steady stream of LPs with the distinctive beats, jaunty rhythms and vocal stylings known informally as "disco".

Took our money, wasted 7 months doing nothing but ignoring our calls, and then abruptly abandoned us having achieved nothing promised in their retainer. Trusting this firm was a $5000 mistake... I will never forgive myself for ignoring all the signs as the nightmare kept worsening: all the broken deadlines; the complete lack of familiarity with even the basics of our case months into the retainer; and only holding his attention or arrival at the scheduled time when a check was delivered. (Particularly insulting: when he knew we had a check for him, the meeting would begin without niceties, just a vulgar request for the check. Upon handing over the money, he would spring from his desk and mumble something about needing to get the check into the 'safe'. 15 minutes later, he'd return and his attention was elsewhere.) I've never felt more like an intruder wasting someone's time, when we should have at least been extended the illusion that our legal needs were in good hands. We asked for our money back, and the attorney wouldn't even respond. Eventually another lawyer at the firm responded, telling us the work was complete and they were keeping the money. Postscript: We hired another firm shortly thereafter. They did more in the first couple weeks (without an advance retainer fee) than this outfit wouldn't achieve over 7 months. We love our new firm... And as far as H&J is concerned: shame on them all.

If you're in a position where you need legal counsel, the most important consideration is simple: time. Will the attorney invest time in your case? Will you be able to spend time with your lawyer to discuss the dispute? And can you feel confident your case is a top priority for your attorney? We've had good and less-good legal counsel in the past, but Erik Hansen and the entire team at Burns & Hansen have exceeded our expectations and delighted us with their compassion, empathy, professionalism, and discipline to keep their case loads at the level where we as clients are generously provided time, support, honest guidance and muscular legal representation. This firm is outstanding.
