Good News for Seniors

But just like the body and sex, if ya don't use it ya lose it! Keeping the mind active in later years will hold back cognitive decline.

"There has been controversy over whether adult humans grow new neurons, and some research has previously suggested that the adult brain was hard-wired and that adults did not grow new neurons. This study, to appear in the journal Cell Stem Cell on April 5, counters that notion. Lead author Maura Boldrini, associate professor of neurobiology at Columbia University, says the findings may suggest that many senior citizens remain more cognitively and emotionally intact than commonly believed.."

The Un-Conscious Relationship

"There is no such thing as a totally conscious relationship because the very nature of relationship is to draw forth the unconscious and realistically one cannot draw forth the unconscious without acting it out at some point..."

"This is all part of the healing, it is not a failure, it is the very fire from which the phoenix rises…"

"So what determines a conscious relationship? Simply put, it is a relationship in which the conscious always gets the better of the unconscious, it is an arena for constant shedding and surrender and this can only happen because of the committed intention of both partners that is supported by their respect and love for each other…"

"You cannot have a conscious relationship with someone who is not ready to release their false self image, the desire for liberation has to be greater than ego’s fear of annihilation and just as importantly, the desire for the other's freedom has to be greater than the need for possession and ownership..."

"There is no arrival in a conscious relationship, no fairytale forever after... It is a journey of evolution of two souls upholding the highest in each other and that contract has its own timing."

"This is not a relationship for the faint hearted, it takes a warrior spirit because there is no room for hiding, no face to mask, no receptacle for projection, no one to blame, no one to make you whole... At the end of the day there is only a mirror of you facing you and in that facing, if there is compassion for self, the divine marriage takes place within."

Should We Re-Think The Nature of Reality?

Another exceptional and thought-provoking article by one of my favorite philosophers and thinkers on consciousness, nondualism and physics, +Bernardo Kastrup.

"Every generation tends to believe that its views on the nature of reality are either true or quite close to the truth. We are no exception to this: although we know that the ideas of earlier generations were each time supplanted by those of a later one, we still believe that this time we got it right. Our ancestors were naïve and superstitious, but we are objective—or so we tell ourselves. We know that matter/energy, outside and independent of mind, is the fundamental stuff of nature, everything else being derived from it—or do we?"

"In fact, studies have shown that there is an intimate relationship between the world we perceive and the conceptual categories encoded in the language we speak. We don’t perceive a purely objective world out there, but one subliminally pre-partitioned and pre-interpreted according to culture-bound categories. For instance, “color words in a given language shape human perception of color.” A brain imaging study suggests that language processing areas are directly involved even in the simplest discriminations of basic colors. Moreover, this kind of “categorical perception is a phenomenon that has been reported not only for color, but for other perceptual continua, such as phonemes, musical tones and facial expressions.” In an important sense, we see what our unexamined cultural categories teach us to see, which may help explain why every generation is so confident in their own worldview."

Blockchains - The NEW Internet is Coming!

EVERYTHING we do on the Internet - especially if it has to do with security, privacy, personal/health data, voting, finances, social networks, and other areas I cant think of - is about to go through a paradigm shift. IMO. :)

"Whether you are a social media marketer offering your services to businesses or a business owner using social media to reach customers, it is imperative you understand that social media is about to go through a dramatic shift."

"Blockchain technology is disrupting numerous industries, and social media is one that is likely to feel the ramifications of blockchain disruption first. Companies used to building their brands on platforms like Facebook and Twitter are about to realize that all that investment of time may have been for naught. As blockchain technology changes the platforms consumers and businesses use and how they network, social media marketing will go through an upheaval like never before."

Is Buddhism Religion or Philosophy

I would love to write something more detailed from my own perspective on this question, but no time right now. The way I look at it ALL religions and belief systems offer us different path's to get at a Truth which lies within each of us. If this or that system of beliefs, practices or philosophies gets you closer to that inner Truth, then this or that belief/philosophy is right for YOU. My own personal beliefs and philosophies draw upon many systems which, in many ways, share similar core concepts. Some of my own influences and practices range from Buddhism, Taoism, Zen, Hinduism, Dudeism, Shamanism, (some aspects of) Objectivism, Pantheism and other's I cant think of right now. Each system or philosophy contributes something to my own personal world-view, morality, sense of self and metaphysical, even transcendent, beliefs. Coming back specifically to Buddhism, after 25 years or so of reading, studying and practising many aspects of many belief systems, I see Buddhism as a psychological, philosophical and contemplative practice which develops the mind, spirit, heart, morals and intentions towards supporting the well-being of other's and ultimately ourselves due to dependant origination (fundamental interconnectedness).

"If you were to go by the stream of psychology and neuroscience books published over the last two decades, you’d think Buddhism is an intricate philosophical system designed by a man with a keen insight for the emergence of psychoanalysis and philosophy some 2,400 years down the road."

"Buddhism is also uniquely positioned to impact the growing secularism manifesting across the planet. And for this, there is plenty to learn from Buddhist ideology."

6 Habits of Grateful People

Gratitude is one of those core markers, powerful predictors, of happiness. Although it may be slightly overstated, the science around happiness and human flourishing consistently finds that for the most part "not everyone who is happy is grateful, but EVERYONE who is grateful, is happy".

"Gratitude (and its sibling, appreciation) is the mental tool we use to remind ourselves of the good stuff. It’s a lens that helps us to see the things that don’t make it onto our lists of problems to be solved. It’s a spotlight that we shine on the people who give us the good things in life. It’s a bright red paintbrush we apply to otherwise-invisible blessings, like clean streets or health or enough food to eat."

Gratitude does not make life struggles go away, but it allows us to weather them easier.

"That’s when I need to turn on the gratitude. If I do that enough, suggests the psychological research, gratitude might just become a habit. What will that mean for me? It means, according to the research, that I increase my chances of psychologically surviving hard times, that I stand a chance to be happier in the good times. I’m not ignoring the threats; I’m appreciating the resources and people that might help me face those threats."

1. Once in a while, they think about death and loss
2. They take the time to smell the roses
3. They take the good things as gifts, not birthrights
4. They’re grateful to people, not just things
5. They mention the pancakes
6. They thank outside the box

Celebrating LSD Expanded Consciousness

A few days late but MAPS is offering webinars, books and you can even record a tribute video about "why LSD is important to you". One of the webinars is being delivered by non other than Stanislav Grof PhD himself and another by one of +Alef Trust's faculty, James Fadiman PhD.

"LSD (lysergic acid diethylamide) is a semi-synthetic compound first developed in 1938 by Dr. Albert Hofmann at the Sandoz pharmaceutical company in Basel, Switzerland. Dr. Hofmann first discovered the psychedelic effects of LSD through accidental exposure to the substance on April 16, 1943."

"On April 19, 1943, Dr. Hofmann became the first person to intentionally experience the psychedelic effects of LSD. After Dr. Hofmann first discovered its effects in 1943, LSD quickly became recognized for its possible therapeutic effects. LSD also played a significant role in the discovery of the serotonin neurotransmitter system and the polymerase chain reaction."

"To celebrate the 75th anniversary of Dr. Hofmann's discovery, the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) is proud to offer opportunities for education and participation throughout the month of April."

When it comes to interpersonal relationships of any kind - partner, lover, co-worker, family or friend - TRUST is the single most important factor which can either build, or destroy, a relationship/friendship. When you have trust, you have everything. When you don't have trust, you have nothing. If someone violates your trust it is an indication of where you and your needs, feelings, values or expectations fit in that person's world-view. If someone knowingly and willingly violates your trust in them, they have explicitly ranked you well below their own self-interest and needs. A relationship, a friendship, a partnership, cannot survive or grow without trust or respect. I will always hold to these principles and beliefs and will always respect the trust others place in me. I expect the same in return - no more, no less.

"How often have you encountered a situation where you have questioned the trust you place in others? Have you trusted someone at their word, only to find you’ve been cheated or lied to? How did that make you feel? Have you ever thought about the trust others place in you? Do you always trust your own judgement?"

"No matter what aspect of your life you’re thinking about, trust is ALWAYS a major factor. That could be in the family unit; the neighbourhood; on the sporting field or in the workplace. Of course it’s always prevalent in your day to day decisions about your own life. If you fail to have faith in yourself and your decisions, it will be difficult for others to have the same regard for you."

Mystical Experiences and The Role of Psilocybin

"Mystical-type experiences are profound experiences primarily characterized by a sense of the interconnectedness of all beings and things, and often accompanied by a sense of sacredness, feelings of joy and peace, and a sense of encountering ultimate reality. Although such experiences have been described by mystics and religious figures throughout the ages, there are few meaningful prospective experimental studies because such experiences usually occur at low rates and often unpredictably."

"Psilocybin in the form the Psilocybe genus of mushrooms has been used for centuries within some cultures for religious and healing purposes. Recent studies at Johns Hopkins have investigated the effects of psilocybin administered to carefully screened and psychologically prepared volunteers who were encouraged to close their eyes and directed their attention inwards. Under such conditions, psilocybin occasioned profound personally and spiritually meaningful mystical-type experiences in the majority of healthy participants. Analysis showed that mystical-type experiences mediate sustained positive changes in behavior, in attitudes about Self (e.g., more authenticity, self-confidence, and inner authority), and in attitudes about Life (e.g., more meaning, enthusiasm, optimism), attitudes about Others (e.g., increased compassion, sensitivity to needs of others, positive relationships), mood (e.g., increased love, joy, inner peace; decreased sadness, anxiety, anger), personality (i.e., increased Openness), spirituality (e.g., increased sense that all of life is interconnected, increased spirituality, increased connection to the God of your understanding, decreased apprehension about death). How To Protect Yourself from the New Russian Threats

"Businesses and governments have been urged to keep their network security up to date following a warning from US and UK authorities about the risk of cyber attack from hackers backed by Russia."

"The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the UK's National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) issued an alert over exploits in routers and other internet connected devices used in homes, small businesses and large organisations, which are said to be vulnerable to cyber attacks."
