To be clear, Dottir, there's nothing inherently BAD about that recipe - meat with condiments are a staple pretty-much everywhere Dead Animal Flesh is enjoyed!
For people who were impoverished and struggling, decent Mexicana-style chili sauce (or Sriracha, if you aren't in a 'hood nearby an Hispanic community) and any sweet fruit preserve makes a pretty good, simple chutney (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chutney
) suitable for mixing into any substantial meat base.
I just wish your late grandmother would have been inspired & capable to cook anything which would have tasted as good! ;)
