On December 2nd, 1976, the pig flies for the first time
It's the first day of a photo shoot for the upcoming Pink Floyd album, Animals
. They tied a giant inflatable pig between two towers of a London power station, and in case the pig broke free, they hired a trained marksman to shoot it down... on the first day.... but he wasn't needed and the pig stayed whee it was supposed to. BUT, on the second day, they didn't re-hire the marksman, and the pig grabbed the opportunity as pigs will tend to do. It broke free and floated off over the city.
It eventually landed several miles away where it was recovered by a furious farmer who was mad because it had "scared his cows". Ican only imagine that
The flying pig would not only be the best free publicity any band could get, but it would become a staple at their shows for years to come.
