Guest House on a Lake by Hutchison & Maul Architecture
Design by Robert Hutchison & Tom Maul
Robert Hutchison, Principal-in-Charge.

Sited as close to Lake Washington as permitted by code, the structure is elevated above a patio to preserve the flat portion of the site for outdoor use. A flat-seam copper cladding system serves the multiple roles of soffit, siding and roofing.
Mercer Island, WA, Constructed 2007

Pacific Heights by Randy Thueme Design Inc
Photography: Barbara Boissevain, RTD
VERTICAL WEAVE. This garden, tucked into rising topography behind a vintage Pacific Heights home, measures 19ft x 32 ft. The client sought a pleasant space to linger as well as appreciate from indoors. She wanted something unexpected — while preserving four spindly Birch trees screening her from an adjacent multistory home. RTD took a gestural approach to the garden — one that reflected the client’s passion as a major collector of Japanese calligraphy and ink painting. The concept was to wrap the space, including new Birch trees, in a three-dimensional composition of stone, concrete, and copper — much as purchases are wrapped in Japan — simply, elegantly, and with great respect.

Calvin Street by Chris Dyson Architects

This is an example of a contemporary living room in London. The copper panels have been pre-oxidized to give a rusted, weathered look. A simple palette of new materials such as clear and translucent glass, powder coated aluminium framed doors, concrete kitchen fittings and limewashed oak floorboards have been used.

Heavy Metal by Hufft Projects.

Photography by Andrew Fabin.

Heavy Metal residence.
The organic shape of the surrounding trees contrasts the hard-lined form of the home. To the right, a photo studio is clad in pre-cast concrete. The large front door defines the central entry. To the left, the great room is screened by perforated metal.

Aptly named, Heavy Metal is a steel-clad private residence sited on eight acres of heavily wooded terrain. The client owns a steel manufacturing facility,
and he wished to have his home reflect both his family business and his personal artistic background. These desires became a critical component for the layout of the home. The residence was designed to be a single-level, gallery-like space in which the client could move easily—from home, to office, to studio—with strong connections to nature from each space. The perforation system was designed to accommodate sun shading, transparency, and privacy needs.

Quonset Hut Kitchen by Frederick + Frederick Architects.

This project Frederick Residence started with a World War II surplus Quonset Hut that was erected in the 1940’s.
We realized the potential for curved ceilings while living in the Hut, and decided to transform the space.
