This post is a bit of inside pool for authors and publishing folks:

A reminder that I DO NOT accept and will pre-emptively reject book blurb requests that come directly from authors. Blurb requests should come from editors/publicists/agents/publishers instead.

The reasons for this policy are at the link attached. Feel free to share with whomever you think may find this applicable. Thanks.

I'm delighted to say that today -- New Year's Eve! -- is the release date for "Miniatures," my collection of humorous, and very short, stories. The signed, limited hardcover edition is almost sold out but eBook versions are cheap (just $6) and available at most e-retailers. I wrote a little about the book, including a quick FAQ, on my site today. I'm really excited to have my first short story collection out in the world!

Let's end 2016 on a high — or at least, humorous — note, shall we? Miniatures: The Very Short Fiction of John Scalzi is now out and available! The limited, signed hardcover edition (of which there were 1500) is now almost entirely sold out, so if you want that version, you should order it ...

Very brief thoughts on the passing of Carrie Fisher.

http://whatever.scalzi.com/2016/12/27/rip-carrie-fisher/
People reports she died this morning. Obviously she will be remembered for Star Wars — she played one of its most iconic characters, who was a general, a senator and a princess. But as much as I liked her in that role, she came most alive for me when I learned that she was a writer, ...

I've seen Rogue One (which I liked) and put a review up on my site. The review is spoiler-free; the comments that follow it might not be. Enjoy!

http://whatever.scalzi.com/2016/12/19/rogue-one-or-the-disneyfication-of-star-wars-is-complete-and-this-is-a-good-thing/
(NOTE: This review of Rogue One is spoiler-free but I will be allowing the conversion in the comment thread to contain spoilers, so if you haven't seen the film yet, you might want to skip the comments for now.) As I walked out of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story last night, the male half of a ...

The second one looked worse to me. The first one looked better, but, of course, the voice was all wrong.

Today's installment of the Whatever Holiday Gift Guide 2016: Arts, Crafts, Music and more. Cool things from artists and other creators, which will make excellent gifts for the holidays.

http://whatever.scalzi.com/2016/11/30/whatever-holiday-shopping-guide-2016-day-three-arts-crafts-music-and-more/
The Whatever Holiday Shopping Guide 2016 continues, and today we move away from books and focus on other gifts and crafts — which you can take to mean just about any other sort of thing a creative person might make: Music, art, knitting, jewelry, artisan foodstuffs and so on. These can be great, ...

Hey, if you're an audiobook fan, the audio version on Miniatures is now available on Audible, and it's really good -- less like a traditional audiobook and more like a comedy album with a really skilled set of performers. And pretty cheap at just $7! Here's the link:

Earlier today I wrote briefly on Carrie Fisher for my blog; now I have a longer piece over at the Los Angeles Times talking about her as a novelist, memoirist and screenwriter. I hope you like it.

http://www.latimes.com/books/jacketcopy/la-et-jc-carrie-fisher-writer-20161227-story.html
Out on the Internet, along with the many heart-touching tributes to Carrie Fisher , photographs of her as Leia Organa, either as princess (the original trilogy) or general (from “ The Force Awakens ”) and with her beloved French bulldog Gary, there’s another picture, originally placed there by cinema documentarian Will McCrabb, showing a page of the script of “The Empire Strikes Back.” On the script are several edits, in red pen, condensing and i...

Today over at the Subterranean Press site, an appropriately brief interview about Miniatures, featuring me and illustrator Natalie Metzger. Incidentally, if you wanted a hard copy of the book, SubPress is down to the last 100 copies or so of the signed, limited edition, and once it's gone, that's it. So get to it! (The ebook edition will continue to be available.)

Subterranean Press is widely considered to be among the finest specialty publishers in the horror, suspense, fantasy and dark mystery genres.

http://whatever.scalzi.com/2016/12/01/whatever-holiday-shopping-guide-2016-day-four-fan-favorites/

For the folks interested in writing process: A piece I wrote for the Audible Range magazine, on how writing specifically for Audiobook publication made me a better writer in general (hint: it helped me ditch excessive dialogue tags, among other things).

Cut dialogue tags and consider the narrator -- tips from the Hugo Award-winning author of Audible Studios’ “The Dispatcher.”
