Bicycle accident data for British Columbia, 2006-2010. Oddly enough, several of the places I expect to get flattened one day don't have any accidents recorded.

Yeah, that may be. Interestingly enough, I've watched people make moves at other intersections that made me think, "yeah ,that's putting yourself in danger," and sure enough, those intersections see a lot of accidents. So it seems to be the overtly dicey spots are less problematic than the ones where people feel comfortable enough to take chances.

With my Dryad hat on I was recently invited to participate in a “Future of Research Dissemination” day at BMJ. Invitees were asked to give brief introductory remarks on what journals are doing now to enhance the experience of research and readers, what researchers and readers want, and then at the end what publishers ought to be doing now to future-proof themselves. My take, fwiw, with some links to previous blog posts with more detail: What are ...

I'm pretty stoked about the Pens' chances, but I'm mostly sharing this article because Wysh used the phrase "Ewok in a hammock" to describe Coach Bylsma's Movember 'stache.
When the hockey world finishes genuflecting at the altar of Sidney Christ — he died for our player safety sins, and rose again once we tightened rules on hits to the head — the conversation will shift to something glaringly obvious in Monday night's 5-0 victory over the New York Islanders: The Pittsburgh Penguins, as a fully armed and operational team, are the favorites to win the Stanley Cup. There might not be anyone close. Sure it's just one g...

Often more the latter than the former, alas. Useful distinction to keep in mind, though.
Are you passionate? Or just intense? When you get going on a pet topic, do people flock to you? Do they leave your discussions Energized? Excited? Eager to go do something? That's passion. You kno...

Also amusing is the fact that you can't find anything on either side of the line for less than half a mil. Could've had three of our Pittsburgh houses for half a mil. Three. With enough left over for a luxury SUV and/or a stack of MacBooks.

In other words, we're gonna be renting here forever. :-)

NHL humour, yay. I even spelled "humour" the Canadian way, since it's about hockey.

I'm wary of going to this extreme myself (and I'm fortunate to be in a position where it's not necessary), but it's a worthwhile read.
Like many cardiologists, Wisconsin-based Dr. William Davis has restored good health to thousands of his patients with his advice on dietary changes to improve the well-being of their hearts. Unlike mo...
