I KNEW it!

“Separating what we commonly think of as ‘dinosaurs’ from birds in a statistical analysis is generally inappropriate, because birds are dinosaurs – they're just the dinosaurs that haven’t gone extinct,” D’Emic said.

#dinosaur   #warmblooded   #birds   #extinct   #evolution
Since their bones were first discovered in the 19th century, dinosaurs were thought to be simply giant dead lizards. Even the name translates to “terrible lizard” in Greek. But they may have much more in common with modern-day birds than was originally thought. A new study released today posits that the dinosaurs were warm-blooded – and not simply large cold-blooded reptiles.

Hey,

I just signed the petition "Save our Skies Santa Cruz: Request the FAA to roll back the new flight path to the old route" and wanted to see if you could help by adding your name.

Our goal is to reach 100 signatures and we need more support. You can read more and sign the petition here:

Objective: Have the FAA roll back the newly implemented Star arrival route SERFR One to the old route Star BIG SUR Two until an Environmental Impact Report has been done and the residents of Santa Cruz County have had a chance to review and comment on the Report. Reason: The Environmental Assessment (EA) stating the change in jet arrival paths to SFO would have “No Impact” on our community was created within the FAA with the help of Atac Cor...

I would certainly sign up for a program to be paid to use the battery in my EV to help balance the load during peaks.

It should be cheaper for the utilities to buy kWh from batteries scattered all over the grid instead of starting up a "peaker plant" and paying 20 to 100 times the cost of baseline power generation.

Interesting...  Amazing that magnetism has such effects, although they are on a very small scale.

“We think of it as all opportunity,” said Josh Castonguay, director of generation and renewable innovation at Green Mountain Power, which is also investing in distributed solar.  Tesla CEO Elon Musk was upfront about what Powerwall meant for utilities when he unveiled the product last month. “You could actually go completely off-grid,” he said.

Exactly...

ZURICH—After the Justice Department indicted numerous executives from world soccer’s governing body on charges of corruption and bribery, frantic and visibly nervous officials from FIFA held an impromptu press conference Wednesday to announce that the United States has been selected to host this summer’s 2015 World Cup.

The weird effects seen in quantum experiments arise because there is a repulsive force between particles and their clones in parallel universes. “The repulsive force between them sets up ripples that propagate through all of these parallel worlds,” Wiseman says.

Using computer simulations with as many as 41 interacting worlds, they have shown that this model roughly reproduces a number of quantum effects, including the trajectories of particles in the double-slit experiment. The interference pattern becomes closer to that predicted by standard quantum theory as the number of worlds increases. Because the theory predicts different results depending on the number of universes, says Wiseman, it should be possible to devise ways to check whether his multiverse model is right — meaning that there is no wavefunction, and reality is entirely classical.

Our congress at work - Don't like what the scientists are saying?  Cut off their funding...

“While supporters of this bill may suggest that they are supporting science, this flawed legislation simply adds additional constraints on agencies while redirecting and/or decreasing critical funds,” wrote Andrew Rosenberg and Michelle Robinson, of the Union of Concerned Scientists, in opposition. “The legislation even goes so far as to prevent federal agencies from using the best available science as they carry out their respective missions.”

The American Competes Reauthorization Act of 2015 was passed by a split House of Representatives Wednesday, amid opposition from a wide swath of the scientific community. The passage also came after hours of negotiations of the bill, which Republicans have said would keep overall federal spending flat– while opponents have said would constrain how the National Science Foundation would be able to spend that money.

Cute little park with some equipment for the smaller kids. Because of its location it pretty much only serves the upper Redwood Estates community. Good thing since there's quite an elevation change to the main parks in Redwood Estates.

This is an amazing little store that has a tremendous variety of items, a great deli & butcher, a coffee shop, a sushi chef and a great local wine & beer selection. They have free WiFi and a nice patio to eat your lunch or snack, or you can take it to one of the many wineries in the area and have a picnic there. It's family owned (now with 2 generations working there) and they are quite open to suggestions from their patrons. Mention that you can't find something and within a week, there it is... If enough people buy it then it stays on the shelves. Because of this flexibility, there is a large British food section for the expat community that lives in the mountains.

Great fish entree & desserts, but the sashimi tuna seemed a little old. It had a mild "fishy" taste. I wanted to go there because the Fish Market restaurants back home (CA) have extremely fresh fish.

Pretty good selection of wines, even if they were the "normal" selection that, I guess, their distributor carries. It would be great if they were to carry lesser known wines from smaller artisanal wineries, like Villa del. Monte.
