Happy Spring (at 3:45 pm PDT)!

#equinox   #spring   #spring2015   #vernalequinox
The March equinox around March 20-21 is the spring (vernal) equinox in the northern hemisphere and fall (autumnal) in the south. Night and day are nearly the same length.

Very interesting history of why wine grapes are grafted on American root stock.  I knew that they were...  I didn't know why.

#grapes   #wine

One hundred fifty years ago, the Great French Wine Blight nearly wiped out an industry that today produces some 40 billion bottles of wine a year. The only solution was a radical fusion of species that remains essential to the success of the wine market. Here's the story of how humanity hacked the wine grape.

Interesting, and good to hear...  I'm holding onto my LEAF until there is a $30k car with a real 200 mile range.  2017?

Some battery costs articles are so negative or conservative.  I still think $300 per kWh is high.
The cost of electric vehicle battery packs is falling so rapidly they are probably already cheaper than expected for 2020, according to a new study in Nature Climate Change. Electric vehicles remain more expensive than combustion-engine equivalents, largely because of battery costs.

This has been done for years in the satcom industry. Google "carrier in carrier" and "DoubleTalk"...

It should be much easier in terrestrial communications because the much lower latency means that less fast memory is required.
A team of Columbia Engineering researchers has invented a technology, full-duplex radio integrated circuits (ICs), that can be implemented in nanoscale CMOS to enable simultaneous transmission and reception at the same frequency in a wireless radio. Up to now, this has been thought to be impossible: transmitters and receivers either work at different times or at the same time but at different frequencies.

Happy Tau/2 day too...

If you want to learn more about the differences between Pi and Tau, here is what "Mr Tau" Michael Hartl sent me this morning:

*"*Happy Half Tau Day, everyone! Michael Hartl here from The Tau Manifesto. The date 3/14/15 may have special significance for some, but we all know the date for celebrating the true circle constant—and tau will have its revenge on June 28, 2031 (6/28/31). Party at my place!

Some of you might be interested to watch the short (< 15 minute) talk I gave recently at the BIL Conference in Los Angeles [1], which is an especially accessible introduction to the issues surrounding pi and tau. I've posted the video to YouTube here:

https://youtu.be/2hhjsSN-AiU?mc_cid=5b4940c1e2&mc_eid=[UNIQID]

Please feel free to share it.

I've also relaunched Tau Shirt sales for a limited time (through March 18, 2015):

http://teespring.com/tauday?mc_cid=5b4940c1e2&mc_eid=[UNIQID]

As usual, you can visit http://tauday.com/?mc_cid=5b4940c1e2&mc_eid=[UNIQID] for updates on all things tau, including links to the above talk and Tau Shirt sales (while available).

Happy Half Tau Day!

Michael

Cute little park with some equipment for the smaller kids. Because of its location it pretty much only serves the upper Redwood Estates community. Good thing since there's quite an elevation change to the main parks in Redwood Estates.

This is an amazing little store that has a tremendous variety of items, a great deli & butcher, a coffee shop, a sushi chef and a great local wine & beer selection. They have free WiFi and a nice patio to eat your lunch or snack, or you can take it to one of the many wineries in the area and have a picnic there. It's family owned (now with 2 generations working there) and they are quite open to suggestions from their patrons. Mention that you can't find something and within a week, there it is... If enough people buy it then it stays on the shelves. Because of this flexibility, there is a large British food section for the expat community that lives in the mountains.

Great fish entree & desserts, but the sashimi tuna seemed a little old. It had a mild "fishy" taste. I wanted to go there because the Fish Market restaurants back home (CA) have extremely fresh fish.

Pretty good selection of wines, even if they were the "normal" selection that, I guess, their distributor carries. It would be great if they were to carry lesser known wines from smaller artisanal wineries, like Villa del. Monte.
