Story

I am a writer who occasionally writes things that make computers do stuff
Introduction
I’m a writer, a notebook and fountain pen fanatic, a hydrologist and mathematical modeler, a programmer, an Irish flute and banjo player, a cyclist, a cider maker, a golf addict, and the father of twins.

Nestled snugly in the Columbia River Gorge in a little town called Hood River, I see the world as my playground, and everyone I meet as a jungle gym buddy. Don't steal my lunch money, if you ask nicely, I'll just give it to you.

This graph looks striking but totally misses the point. The real issue is ethics in video game journalism.

#Seriously, excellent podcast by the +Planet Money team on what happened to women in Computer Science, and it's totally apropos of #gamergate
For decades, the share of women majoring in computer science was rising. Then, in the 1980s, something changed.

Study scientifically shows what the rest of us already know: Only very weathly people and corporations have any effect at all on politics.

Barbie's new #unapologetic campaign is somewhat un-compelling to me. Maybe it's just because I'm a man, but I look at this and think "If you can dream it, you can be it, as long as 'it' is 'pink.'"

Sure, you can be an astronaut as a girl, but you're going to be a hyper-sexualized astronaut, dammit. I feel like the same message would be much more realistically presented in toys marketed to boys.
Barbie has tried out a lot of different jobs in the past, but now she’s added a new one to her resume: businesswoman. Mattel has released Entrepreneur Barbie, in an attempted to inspire young girls to dream bigger.

John Oliver is absolutely brilliant. He lambastes FIFA, exposing how amazingly disgusting that organization is, while simultaneously saying "but I still love that they're bringing the World Cup." I totally agree.

It's honestly one of the funniest things I've seen in a long time, but still serious.

Wow.

"John Kerry's challenge to Snowden to return and face trial is either disingenuous or simply ignorant that current prosecutions under the Espionage Act allow no distinction whatever between a patriotic whistleblower and a spy. Either way, nothing excuses Kerry's slanderous and despicable characterizations of a young man who, in my opinion, has done more than anyone in or out of government in this century to demonstrate his patriotism, moral courage and loyalty to the oath of office the three of us swore: to support and defend the Constitution of the United States."
Daniel Ellsberg: Until the Espionage Act gets reformed, the greatest patriot whistleblower of our time can never come home safe and receive justice

Actually, Snowden coming home and standing trial seems like it would be the last thing the administration would want. It wouldn't undo the leak, but it would bring the issue of NSA abuses back to the top of the news cycle. With Snowden in Russia a) few of us are focused on the story, and b) they can continue to paint him as a traitor/defector. If he were to come home, be tried, and be sent to prison he would be seen as a martyr. It's likely there would be OWS sized protests.

"According to the curricula proposal, students would only be taught lessons depicting American heritage in a positive light, and effectively ban any material that could lead to dissent. Under the proposed policy, a review committee would regularly read instructional text and course syllabi to ensure that educational materials do not stray from subject matter that complies with the policy."

Sure, sounds totally reasonable. #überalles
Students don't agree with a proposed school policy that would censor American history.

"It is not the responsibility of our female population to take “ X” number of steps to lessen the chance that a member of our male population will engage in untoward conduct towards them, be it assault or street harassment. As a society, we deal with violence, especially sexual violence, against women in much the wrongheaded manner that we have fought the war on drugs. We focus on the supply-side, with an emphasis on the things that women must do to “stay safe” instead of focusing on lessening mens’ “demand” to view women as purely a disposable commodity. In short, we emphasize how women can prevent being assaulted instead of telling men and boys not to assault women in the first place."
As most of you probably know, someone somewhere dumped a deluge of purported nude photographs of a number of female celebrities online yesterday. The victims include the likes of Kate Upton, Victoria Justice, Ariana Grande, Kirsten Dunst, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Krysten Ritter, Yvonne Strahovski, and Teresa Palmer. But the focal [...]

This post perfectly describes the decision my mother couldn't make, and the one that I decided I had to make even decades before having children.
