Things that make you go hmmmm. [apologies to C&C Music Factory.]  This article highlights some of the complexities associated with the environment that researchers work in.

CIHR launched its new website today.
Good luck to all the Memorial researchers who are waiting for the decisions on the Operating Grants Open Competition.  If it is like the past, we should expect more news in the next couple weeks.

I think the statement "You can’t say research and innovation are your absolute priorities and then not protect ideas." is a very good way of summarizing a big challenge.

A nice article that does a good job presenting some complex associations between nutrition, cardiovascular diseases, and diabetes in humans.

This article provides a good example of why basic science, clinical, applied health, and health services and policy research in cardiovascular diseases and stroke need to continue to be supported.

Congratulations to Keon, Enoka and Elizabeth for publishing this research. Both research trainees and the research assistant worked hard to collect a lot of data to complete this project.

Cardiovascular pharmacology and experimental therapeutics researcher.
Introduction
John J. McGuire, PhD is an Associate Professor of Cardiovascular Sciences in the Division of BioMedical Sciences of the Faculty of Medicine at Memorial University. He trained under the supervision of several leading Canadian pharmacologists at leading research intensive universities. His PhD supervisor was Dr. Brian M. Bennett, Professor of Pharmacology at Queen's University. His post-doctoral fellowship co-supervisors were Dr. Chris R. Triggle, Professor of Pharmacology, and Dr. Morley D. Hollenberg, Professor of Pharmacology and Medicine at the University of Calgary.

John completed an MBA in order to gain formal management and administration skills. In addition to his service to Memorial University, he participates as an active committee member of scientific peer-review at the national level for research funding agencies, and external reviewer for various scientific journals.

Research Interests
Dr. McGuire's research program focuses on investigating protease-activated receptor 2 (PAR2) in cardiovascular diseases, with a particular interest in endothelium dysfunction. To examine PAR2 a range of methodologies are used, which currently, includes the imaging of intracellular Ca2+ immunofluorescence in single native endothelial cells, recording wire myograph isometric tension and microelectrode membrane potential in isolated blood vessels, and measuring conscious blood pressure by radiotelemetry in whole animal experiments. His laboratory also uses biochemical and molecular biology techniques to assess the PAR2 signal transduction pathways in freshly isolated cells and tissues. His research laboratory has expertise with a number of genetic (hypertension, stroke, diabetes), and acquired (high angiotensin II) cardiovascular disease animal models,
especially in mice.

Training of Students and Fellows
Dr. McGuire provides research training opportunities to summer students, undergraduate Honours students, MSc and PhD graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and visiting scientists. After graduation, his trainees have gone on to successful careers as medical professionals, academic program instructors, and research veterinarians. Trainees experiences have been enhanced by collaborations with national and international research laboratories. John is also engaged in teaching cardiovascular pharmacology and physiology in undergraduate and graduate studies programs. Post-doctoral Fellows, undergraduate and graduate students under Dr. McGuire's supervision publish articles in peer-reviewed journals and have been awarded scholarships, fellowships, and prizes based on their research.
Bragging rights
John has published in Canadian and international peer-reviewed pharmacology and physiology journals. He is the Principal Investigator of operating grants, fellowships, and scholarships awards from the Canada Foundation for Innovation, Canadian Institute for Health Research, Newfoundland and Labrador Research and Development Corporation, and the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada. He is an invited member of scientific peer-review committees for operating grants and scholarship committees of CIHR, HSFC, NSERC. John is a member of the Canadian Society of Pharmacology and Therapeutics, the American Physiological Society, and the British Pharmacological Society.
