Excellent piece. First heard of Apollo Robbins in Sleights of Mind: The Neuroscience of Magic. Check out the videos, the guy's incredible.
In the latest issue of the New Yorker, Adam Green profiles Apollo Robbins, by most accounts the world's best pickpocket. How he goes about engaging his prey is fascinating: One day, over lunch at a Vietnamese restaurant in a Las Vegas strip mall, Robbins demonstrated his method on me. "When I shake someone's hand, I apply the lightest pressure on their wrist with my index and middle fingers and lead them across my body to my left," he said, show...

Bruce Schneier - security guru & part of speech
From "The Insider's TSA Dictionary": Bruce Schneiered: (V, ints) When a passenger uses logic in order to confound and perplex an officer into submission. Ex: "A TSA officer took my Swiss army knife, but let my scissors go. I then asked him wouldn't it be more dangerous if I were to make my scissors into two blades, or to go into the bathroom on the secure side and sharpen my grandmother's walking stick with one of the scissor blades into a terro...

Magnetar burst...cool stuff :)
[This post is a modified, updated version of an article I wrote a few years back. Since today is the anniversary of the event, I thought it could use an update.] Eight years ago today—on Dec. 27, 2004—the Earth was rocked by a cosmic blast so epic its scale is nearly impossible to exaggerate. The flood of gamma and X-rays that washed over the Earth was detected by several satellites designed to observe the high-energy skies. RHESSI, which observe...

Oh.....just saw this. Don't know much about Kurtz other than that he's one of the founders of the modern Skeptic movement. Time to learn something about him.
I am greatly saddened to learn that one of the founders of modern skeptical outreach, Paul Kurtz, has died. Paul was the motivating force behind the creation of the Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal (CSICOP, which recently changed its name to the much more palatable Committee for Skeptical Inquiry, or CSI), one of the leading centers of the skeptical movement. You can read more about Paul’s work on Wikipedia. ...

Introduction
I'm an Irishman living in Paris, France since 1999. Interested in science (mainly astronomy, physics and psychology) skepticism and space exploration amongst many, many other things. I've been known to pick up a guitar and screech a few songs out every now and again. Can't stand: astrology, homeopathy, leeching, and other related pre-scientific silliness. Don't get me started :)
