Not one of the longest thunderstorms we've had in all my time in Wuxi, but quite thundery and very dull and wet for a time.

I don't recognise the Smith's Bookshop area at all.

This is a repeat of the previous video. You can delete one if you go to "Video manager". (Click on the cog at the top of the page.)

Very clear day. Afternoon, I assume, from the angle of the sunlight.

The short trip from Parkson on Renmin Lu to the Far Eastern on Zhongshan Lu through the building work that has been disrupting the centre of Wuxi for the past few years.

Part 3 of my adventure along Nanchang Jie and the surrounding environs. In this episode, Mr Bamboo turns left and right, and then right -- no, left -- and eventually finds his way to where he wanted to go.

An enjoyable sonata which is also on Camerata Köln’s 1984 album, "Recorder Sonatas from Der Getreue Music-Meister" where it's mislabelled as a Sonata in A major, but it's taken me 30 years to discover that this afternoon by complete chance.

I like this version with the viola, which seems to have a better quality, richer sound than the version I have. [Edited.]

This version is actually being played on a normal viola, not a viola da gamba.

I see the local wide boys not only have the jet boats, but also the pretentious SUVs to go with them.

You've seen this trip before, but not from this angle.

Starting on Renmin Zhong Lu, I go over to Parkson and must forage far and wide to find somewhere to park my bike.

In part 2, I rattle my way down Nanchang Jie, an ancient street which, I think, hadn't even been built when I first came to Wuxi.

You might want to mute the sound because the cobbles cause a lot of irritating rattling. I did try some music to muffle it, but that barely made any difference.

Occupation
EFL teacher
Skills
I can make nice, simple custom Powerpoints, understand how to calculate weighted values in Excel, and can baffle my colleagues by talking about linguistics.
Employment
  • dipont
    EFL teacher, 2009 - present
My job is to teach English to Chinese school children who are planning to study at foreign universities, mostly in the States. For the past four years, I've been teaching the 1st-year students the IGCSE English as a Second Language course, and EAP to 2nd-year students. In 2012-13, I started teaching IB English B at Standard Level, and in 2013-14, I taught both 1st- and 2nd-year students. The 1st-year students are doing the Higher Level course.

Story
Tagline
An old China Hand.
Introduction
After finishing a BA and MA in English at the University of Canterbury, I worked for the British Antarctic Survey for three years as administrative staff (of a sort). I then went to Manchester where I did my PhD in historical linguistics and some tutoring for the English Department. I then returned to Cambridge where I had a temporary lectureship with the Linguistics Department for a year, followed by five years of unemployment in Dickensian circumstances. Eventually I got a job teaching EFL in China, where I've been since September 2002.
Education
  • Victoria University of Manchester
    Linguistics, 1991 - 1995
PhD in Historical Linguistics. My PhD thesis was "A non-linear theory of the stress shift in Proto-Germanic", which was supervised by Chris McCully. It was a study of the switch to initial stress in Proto-Germanic, with diversions into Sanskrit, Greek, and Latin. It culminated with a study of stress assignment in Old English.
