They don't make 'em like this any more...

What a blast!

This unbelievable Fiat S76, the so-called Beast of Turin, is the one surviving example of a pair of speed-record contenders the Italian automaker built before WWI. Its gargantuan 28.5-liter ...

Really clever.  Highlights the stupidity of the whole thing, but also gives a great overview of what went on. #WWI #war

Eoin Young R.I.P.

I just came across the news that Eoin S Young died a few days back.  Came across this initially in an English Motorsport website video at http://goo.gl/jf2nDn
Checked out the local news and could only find the link from The Press.

Sad news, read several of Eoin's books over the years.
In the old days, Grand Prix racing was a lot more dangerous for drivers but also more of a gentlemen's sport.

Monte Cassino 70th commemoration 2014

Today - May 18th is the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Monte Cassino.  I was at Monte Cassino visiting the Abbey and the Commonwealth War Cemetery on May 18 two years ago.  We didn't realise then that the date had a special significance.

Reading about the current commemoration, the veterans who are attending, and Prince Harry brings it all back.  The Abbey was beautiful, and the cemetery visit was very moving.

Check out the blog entry for our visit.

Woohoo - Go Otaki.  Great local project.  It will be interesting to follow this.

This is an ambitious project and a worthy cause.  It's interesting to me because I live near Otaki, love to see kids being better educated, and I like Chromebooks.

Using Chromebooks in education is not too common here in NZ yet, you still can't easily buy these here.

Six schools in the Ōtaki district aim to have Google Chromebooks in the hands of each and every student within the next year, in an initiative being driven by the Te Reanga Ipurangi Ōtaki Education Trust.

This cracks me up.

But then I realise that it isn't really funny, just very sad.

"Kia ora to our New Zealand mates,
where getting on-line will have shorter waits."

So we are finally officially getting Chromebooks.  That's great news.

OK, a rainy day project (or in my case a rainy week).

Irony.   Here's an excellent example.

Examples of irony usually make me laugh, but this one just leaves me feeling very depressed.  It seems to me that Governments, of all persuasions, have just become so big that they are out of control.
As the United States made a public case about the dangers of buying from Huawei, the Chinese telecommunications giant, classified documents show that the National Security Agency was creating its own back doors — directly into Huawei’s networks.

We noticed that the Lattes in Italy were not as hot as those we get in NZ.  It's nice to see that this is because that's the way the Italians think it should be done - rather than laziness or ineptitude.  Actually I personally liked then that way, and I guess this is an Italian invention so they must be doing it correctly.
