Sigma 50-100mm F1.8 DC HSM Art Lens | A7RII
I received my Sigma 50-100 f1.8 Art Zoom yesterday. As most of you who follow me know - I love shooting natural light portraits. I did some quick test shots with Ricky and I have to say I'm astounded at how good this lens is. I shot this on the A7RII (in crop mode) with the lens mounted via my MC-11 adapter. I used Eye AF in AF-C mode.

I am constantly amazed at how well the Sigma Art lenses perform. Whoever is in charge of lens design in Aizu is very, very gifted. This lens gives me an equivalent 75-150 lens, perfect for covering the focal lengths I use.

1/200 @ F1.8 400 ISO. The image has not had any sharpening applied in post.

The Bonnie Banks of Loch Lomond
Here's a shot of the Bonnie Banks of Loch Lomond taken for my rolling Sigma MC-11 SA-E field test.

We've now tested the MC-11 SA-E on the A7R II with every Sigma Full Frame SA Mount lens listed on the compatibility chart and they all work really well. The manual states that it is not compatible with AF-C mode but we tried it and the great news is that it works. Eye AF also works.

Kudos to Sigma. This is the best Sony E Mount AF adapter we've used to date. :-)

Sigma MC-11 Update
The Sigma MC-11 adapter received a firmware update to version 1.01 yesterday. It's a smashing adapter and I love that I can use my excellent Sigma lenses on my Sony A7R II's, but unfortunately the only bugbear I've experienced with it hasn't been addressed. :(

DETAILS
A lot of people who haven't used any of the equipment I'm talking about aren't fully understanding exactly what's happening, so in simple terms here's how the camera/lenses/adapters I'm using operate. As you will notice, the MC-11 used with Sigma SA lenses has 2 completely frustrating steps (*) that impede your ability to shoot quickly compared to a DSLR, native Sony, and the Sigma/Commlite Adapter/Sony set-ups. I'm shooting in Manual mode as always.

Nikon D810 DSLR with Sigma (Nikon Fit) Lenses
Set Aperture/shutter speed to your desired setting whilst metering (lens diaphragm remains open)
Focus
Compose
Activate shutter release
Diaphragm of the lens closes rapidly to your desired setting whilst taking shot

Sony A7R II with Sigma (Nikon Fit) Lenses on Commlite AF adapter
Set aperture on camera (Sony meters and adjusts EVF feedback accordingly)
Focus
Compose
Activate shutter release
Diaphragm of the lens closes rapidly to your desired setting whilst taking shot. (Same as DSLR)

Sony A7R II with Sony G Master Lenses
Set aperture on camera
Whilst adjusting aperture, the lens diaphragm physically closes to your desired setting
Focus (diaphragm only opens a little whilst acquiring focus)
Compose
Activate shutter release

Sony A7R II with Sigma (SA fit) Lenses on Sigma MC-11 adapter
Set aperture on camera
Whilst adjusting aperture, the lens diaphragm physically closes to your desired setting. (same as native Sony)
Press to Focus
* Diaphragm opens up fully again
* Diaphragm then slowly ratchets back incrementally to your chosen setting
Compose
Activate shutter release

The Commlite adapter's behaviour most closely resembles a DSLR. The Sony behaviour has the bonus of giving DOF feedback live in the EVF. I don't really care either way which method Sigma prefer - I'd just like the MC-11 to behave like one or the other instead of having the extra 2 frustrating diaphragm open/close stages. It's really frustrating and a real problem when shooting in high pressure environments where speed is of the essence: fashion, music, etc. It breaks the flow between photographer and subject.

+Paul Monaghan Pleasure to spend some time with you too Paul. Glad you found it helpful. ;-)

Yes, as you say, hopefully Sigma will update the firmware to either:

A: Behave like a DSLR where the aperture diaphragm stays open whilst focusing and then closes rapidly to your chosen setting only once you've activated the shutter.
Or...
B: Behave like a Sony G-Master lens where the aperture diaphragm stays closed at the aperture you set on the camera and only opens a little whilst you focus and take the shot..

It would be really handy actually to have a choice when your updating the firmware where you could select either option. If you have 2 adapters you could then program them differently to suit different shooting circumstances.

Comic Cuts
I have to say I love it when you get Elgol Beach all to yourself, particularly so when there's a nice orange glow from the approaching Sunset. It was pretty idyllic for 15 minutes or so until a bus arrived and about 30 snappers with their RAB Anoraks, Paramo troosers and F-Stop bags scampered along the beach like military ants off to devour their prey. It was such a pity that by the time they reached the end of the beach the light had gone. Ach well... at least they looked the part. :-)

As I sat on the car bonnet enjoying a packet of Beef Hula Hoops and a can of Vimto I had to chuckle. As my Granny used to say "If you're not fast, you're last! ;-)))

I made this shot with a Sony A7RII and the excellent Sigma 24-35 Art Lens mounted via an MC-11 adapter.

SIGMA MC-11 SA-E AF ADAPTER | Quick Preview
Christmas came early to Moore Mansions today with the arrival of two Sigma MC-11 SA-E AF Adapters. My trusty assistant Ricky and I shot a quick video on the iPhone just to give a wee taster of how it performs. We thought that the 150-600 Sport at 600mm would probably stress it to the max so we tried that lens first on my A7R II.

We will spend the weekend shooting some proper footage and testing it in more depth.  Stay tuned on Monday for an update. ;)

+Sigma Imaging (UK) Ltd +Sony UK
As most of my followers know, I've been shooting Nikon for the last few years, but I have also invested in some Sony A7R II bodies for specific shoots. I have been testing the Commlite ENF-E1 Nikon F Mount to Sony FE Mount AF adapter but with very disappointing results.

Great photography is not about what you see, it's about what you make others see.
Introduction
I'm a professional photographer from Glasgow Scotland. I've worked internationally in New York, West Hollywood and Tokyo. I shoot multiple genres from landscape and portrait, to fashion/beauty and music. I like to keep it real.

VISUAL LIKES
The Third man, Citizen Kane,  Anything by Kubrick, especially his fake moon landings ;-) Blade Runner, Alien, Lawrence of Arabia, Fight Club, Se7en, The Blues Brothers, A Fistful of Dollars, Dirty Harry, Diamonds Are Forever.

RECOMMENDATIONS
There are far too many 'fauxtographers' with millions of followers on the web who have great social media skills, but are average photographers. If you really want to learn more about the art of photography then I would recommend the work of the following Artisans.

Jeanloup Sieff
Guy Bourdin
Helmut Newton
Bob Carlos Clarke
David Bailey
Arnold Newman
Duffy
Ansel Adams
Albert Watson
Harry Benson
Aubrey Powell
Gavin Evans
Bragging rights
Being a well grounded Glaswegian, who grew up in an area of social deprivation, the first thing you learn in life, is that It's never right to brag!

I'm a Pro Photographer who travels around the world a fair bit. I love a nice Burger - Honest Burger in London being a particular favourite. I met some friends this afternoon and we decided to give BMB a spin as we had read that it was pretty good. If you're one of the 28000 plus people who follow my Google Plus page you'll know I'm a pretty straight up guy. If something's great I say it, if something's not great, then I say that too. So how did it go? Well... what a disappointment it turned out to be; not one of us enjoyed our meals. It was way overpriced for the quality of food we received. The Burger was pretty poor, and lacking in taste. It was also served lukewarm and very grainy. I've actually had better burgers in many other places in Glasgow. The fries (also served lukewarm) were pretty terrible too. I do a fair bit of food photography and have friends who are chef's. The oil the fries were cooked in was... to use a good Glasgow expression - bogging. I want to taste fries not stodgy oil. I didn't enjoy my meal at all, in fact I felt ripped off and based on my experience I won't be returning. Hopefully if the owners read this they'll maybe try and take some action to remedy the faults and improve the dining experience. After all, if your reputation is based on serving good food, and the food's not too hot, you're in trouble really.
