SELF2014: The Linux Game Industry
Be gentle, I had a cold and spent the prior week in crunch mode for two separate games, so I wasn't at the height of my powers here. Try to ignore when I say something obviously incorrect, like when I mention that the Humble Indie Bundle 5 was a week long (it was two)...I feel like there are a lot of flubs and other such nonsense in here.
Once I tell the story about Linus Torvalds saying "die, motherfucker!" I find myself cursing too much in this talk. The flood gates were open. Sorry.
This talk also has to ignore a lot of important stuff, like the arrival of Unity on the platform, or good work that other like and are doing to bring games to Linux, or Desura arriving long before Steam, etc. I decided to pick the biggest five events (Doom, Loki, Humble Bundle, Steam, and UE4) to illustrate the history and current status, but a lot of people did a lot of hard work to keep the ship afloat over the last 15 years.
Also, if I told a story about you that I shouldn't have: sorry!
Contains spoilers aplenty.
