Pet peeve: People don't know the difference between kinds of plastic.

These cups are going to spoil a lot of high-temperature composter output.

Lots of stuff like this around. They print "degradable" on plastics that are just industry standard materials. When asked, they say "well it degrades under UV light" - in other words, it will live forever in a landfill. The labeling process is also known as industry self-regulation.

The NCAA, an organization with such open-decision making practices and clear accountability as to provide lessons to the mafia, is forcing a University of Minnesota wrestler to give up his music career or be declared ineligible for profiting off his own image. Can we please just disband this organization? Bauman embodies everything for which college athletics should stand. He should be the face of the NCAA. But the NCAA wants to make sure it is t...

I certainly agree with LGM's crusade against the labor monopoly that is the NCAA, but I understand this rule. If you're trying to prevent athletes from benefiting off their fame and endorsements, them saying "no but my fame is from this other arena" becomes a very gray line to judge.

We go through a lot of mice in this business. They're generally the first animal that a potential drug runs up against: in almost every case, you dose mice to check pharmacokinetics (blood levels and duration), and many areas have key disease models that run in mice as well. That's because we know a lot about mouse genetics (compared to other animals), and we have a wide range of natural mutants, engineered gene-knockout animals (difficult or imp...

Appropriately, the Bloomberg ‘Chart of the Day’: The CHART OF THE DAY shows the relationship between growth in China’s gross domestic product and home prices in metropolitan Vancouver, Canada’s most expensive city, where Statistics Canada data show 15 percent of the population has a first language that’s a Chinese dialect. The most recent Chinese data signal Vancouver may get fresh support from across the Pacific Ocean. Annual growth in Asia’s l...

Whaaaat
Like many people, I have a weakness for "We've had it all wrong!" explanations. Here's another one, or part of one: is obesity an infectious disease? During our clinical studies, we found that Enterobacter, a genus of opportunistic, endotoxin-producing pathogens, made up 35% of the gut bacteria in a morbidly obese volunteer (weight 174.8 kg, body mass index 58.8 kg m−2) suffering from diabetes, hypertension and other serious metabolic deteriorat...

Anyway, I'm not convinced that the LCS has any warfighting capability that the Oliver Hazard Perry class doesn't. It (both variants) also appears undermanned and insufficiently sturdy. Aluminum superstructure on steel hull? Seriously?

Never is something more true than, "Don't listen to what they say, watch what they do." From FITREPS to the Milington Diktat, we have developed a habit of telling each other little lies. Mostly it is from the intellectual cowardliness of not wanting to be the bearer of bad news, or to do something that will make someone not like you. Worse, it is a sign of disrespect where you tell a lie to someone who knows you are telling a lie, and they act li...

While a tiny handful of cities across America have fiber optic connections (ahem, Kansas City, Kansas) most of us are left with overpriced connections leaving us frustrated to say the least. Often times, even in places where fiber is already in the ground, the last-mile problem usually rears its ugly head. It's halted fiber-to-the-premises plans even in places like wealthy Palo Alto, California. But in China, the word is a new government policy f...

Both the most expensive and worst pho I have ever eaten. Employee told me they had WiFi, went to get the password for me, then was rebuffed by the apparent owner/manager.

I like their banh mi, my wife likes their vermicelli noodles. Not the fanciest decor, but a cheap solid lunch.

It's amazing when they fix a problem for free, then when you insist on paying, the crusty old mechanic says "A big bag of Cheetos and a Diet Coke."
