Awesome day in Alpine County yesterday, taking on the notorious Death Ride. Five mountain passes, 16,000ft of climbing over 124 miles.
For non-cyclists: this is like cycling from London to Birmingham while simultaneously riding up to the top of Mont Blanc... and down again. In a day. (OK, if you're American think LA to San Diego + Mt Whitney).
Something around 3,500 cyclists, with roads closed for the first four passes - what a treat! But what really made Death Ride an unforgettable event was the hundreds of volunteers. Alpine is the least populated county in California, but it seemed like the entire county turned out to feed, water and support the riders. The atmosphere was incredible.
