A vat of mercury definitely makes every situation better and not worse.

#xkcd

Hang on, I've heard this problem. We need to pour water into the duct until the phone floats up and ... wait, phones sink in water. Mercury. We need a vat of mercury to pour down the vent. That will definitely make this situation better and not worse.

Wow; irony. I woke up LATE this morning and it was basically due to the same thing....cell phone alarms.

We actually have a bit of accident footage for your #DashcamShaming  pleasure!

And remember, keep those eyes in front of you - even especially if you drive a people carrier.

Still working through some kinks with Harry's Lap Timer... seems increasing the GPS update rate to 10Hz helped significantly for speed and course information, but if the OBD stream isn't able to keep up HLT extrapolates wildly. I'm pretty sure I would have noticed hitting 10,000RPM.

At any rate, here's the video from my second-fastest run from today minus RPM-type data. Camera battery failed during the fastest lap, so just pretend that this video is 0.451s shorter.

Turn lanes are hard.

You should see Highway 280's turn lanes now. So there is dedicated U-Turn Only lights. Those lights used to be left turn only. So now you have 2 Left turn lanes (LTL). The Left LTL is U-turn and left turn, while the Right LTL is left turn only. Gets really hairy when the guy in the right line decides to U-Turn with you in the left hand lane trying to turn left. With that being said I dodge 280 like the plague.

Easily the most gripping book I've read this year.  I can't wait to see it on the screen.

I'm in the midst of reading this book right now, and IT IS AWESOME!

Very excited for this movie!

#themartian
Holy hell, the adaptation of Andy Weir’s The Martian looks good. True, this movie is also about Matt Damon trying to survive alone on distant planet, but unlike Interstellar, no one is crying the whole goddamn time. Seriously, it looks amazing.

Here's a chance to try out the new Huawei TalkBand B2 (that crazy hybrid fitness/health tracker + Bluetooth headset) before it goes on sale.
Last month Huawei announced the TalkBand B2 - the sequel to a unique wearable device that combines a Bluetooth headset with a health tracker. The media already had the chance to go hands-on with the product, and now we want to give consumers the chance to review the device before anyone else in ...

Look at that - Apple innovated!

Too bad their ecosystem doesn't thrive on healthy competition.  At least their watch will be the Best Watch with iOS support!

(h/t +Eric Richardson )

Apple has found an innovative new way to be a dick: Apps mentioning Pebble support are removed from the App Store.
We have just had the latest version of our SeaNav US iOS app rejected by Apple because we support the Pebble Smartwatch and say so in the app description and meta-data (we also state in the review notes that "This application was approved for use with the Pebble MFI Accessory in the Product Plan xxxxxx-yyyy (Pebble Smartwatch)".

Introduction

Hi.  I'm John, and I'm a geek

• I void warranties.  Regularly.  I'm a chronic tinkerer.  I get a thrill from taking things apart, figuring out how they work and trying to make them better (or at least better suited to my whims).  I sometimes even put them back together again (though I tend to have parts left over).

• I'm an Android fan(atic).  I tinker with ROM-building every now and then, but mostly just continuously tweak my own setup.  I also have a serious app addiction.  If you need an app to do a specific thing, chances are I've probably played with just what you're looking for.  And I'm always glad to make recommendations - just ask!  I'm a fan of prepaid phone service - I pay T-Mobile $30 each month for my phone service (complete with LTE on my Nexus 4).  I rock a Pebble like a boss.

• I think cars are neat.  I've owned, driven, worked on, and modified a small fleet of Saabs.  And while the wife still drives a really sweet 9-5 wagon, I've moved on to a Subaru BRZ - such fun!

• I'm a bit of a Tolkien nerd, and had a themed wedding complete with swords and chainmail and hobbits. I'm also into Star Trek, Doctor Who, Douglas Adams, and I'm working my way through Asimov's works.

• I like firearms, and shooting them, but don't have nearly enough.  What I do have is a very particular set of skills... oh, nevermind.
