Oops.
The Martin Guitar Museum loaned the one-of-a-kind guitar under the assumption that it'd be swapped out with a janky replica prior to its destruction.

30 years ago today....
The NASA family lost seven of its own on the morning of Jan. 28, 1986, when a booster engine failed, causing the Shuttle Challenger to break apart just 73 seconds after launch. In this photo from Jan. 9, 1986, the Challenger crew takes a break during countdown training at NASA's Kennedy Space Center.

No amount of snow will ever keep a good grill down! That's roughly two feet of snow behind it, but that's actually compressed from the actual amount that fell because it warmed up today. Officially, my area got the most snowfall of anyone else at 34 inches.

It takes a dedicated bbq fan to cook out in this weather. My hat is off to you. But only for a moment since it's cold.

I'm converting my "Star Wars" non-anamorphic laserdiscs (from before Lucas's idiotic changes) to anamorphic DVD. After deinterlacing/decombing, I bumped up the color saturation and sharpness and added a bit of oomph to the audio. There is only so much that can be done with 480i content to make it look good, but so far I can't say that I'm disappointed.

I shouldn't have to do this but apparently Disney still doesn't see fit to release the original trilogy remastered on Blu-ray.

One has to have priorities, even after almost 3 feet of snow has dropped.

Thinking fondly of DeForest Kelley on what would have been his 95th birthday. I managed to spend about 15 minutes talking with him and his wife many years ago. They were amazingly kind and gracious. I also got his signature, which he NEVER gave out, but it's completely faded away now. That's okay, because I have that memory which means even more.

Rest in peace, Dr. McCoy.

20 years ago today, we said goodbye to "Calvin and Hobbes". One of the brightest spots ever on the comics page was forever dimmed, and the daily comics have not been the same since.

I'm extremely pleased with Enviroquest. I live in an area with a bad soil mixture comprised mostly of different types of clay. Enviroquest was the *only* company who quoted me a single price for any work that was necessary to get below 4.0 pCi/l. None of the others would guarantee results and just about all of them charge for additional taps. To top it off, Enviroquest had the best price by a few hundred dollars. They ended up coming out several times, installed multiple taps, and even upgraded the fan to the most powerful consumer version out there. But the end result is that I'm now below 4.0, I only had to pay once, their people were always friendly and courteous, and they honored their contract without question. Sure, it took multiple times, but I'm the kind of person who appreciates the fact that they're at least trying to satisfy the contract without looking for excuses to add extra charges. In fact, I'm quite sure that they ended up losing money on me if only from the fan upgrade. But my radon levels are now below 4.0, I only paid once, and they honored the contract. You can't ask for more.

I scheduled an appointment to have some plumbing work done, particularly a PVC vent to the roof line for my new upflushing toilet and some bad valve replacements. He surveyed the work to be done and gave me a quote around what I expected, so we set the date to have the work done. He and one of his associates (his son, maybe?) were out here early in the morning at 9 AM. They were completely finished by 1 PM. Everything was done exactly as requested. The most phenomenal part is that when I was handed the bill, it was about 1/2 of the estimate because everything went so smoothly! I was very willing to write that check, and I told them flat out "You have a positive referral." I'll have absolutely no problems calling them again when plumbing work needs to be done.
