I never thought I'd say this, but there might actually be a reason to watch MTV again. (Yes, I feel very dirty saying that...)

I'm 100% Yankee, but I thought this was funny. Happy 4th!

This is very cool! Guys who think women can't be scientists or technicians just because they're women are a disgrace to men everywhere.

I'm sure that I'm going to stoke someone's fire with this, but whatever. The full text is at http://econfaculty.gmu.edu/wew/articles/00/black_confederates.html and is worth reading. As a 100% Yankee, I have no vested interest whatsoever; but the amount of ignorance surrounding this topic on both sides is almost palpable.

Humanity just successfully sent a ship 7.5 billion km over nine years to get a close-up of one of the most distant bodies in our solar system by flying over it at a distance of 12.5 km at its closest point.

I need to watch "Robin Hood: Men In Tights" now. :(
Roger Rees, the Welch-born icon of the stage who gained fame for playing the title role in the original marathon production of The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby, has died. He was 71.

Even if it's not entirely accurate, "1776" - the story of the creation (and conflict) of The Declaration of Independence - is still one of my favorite musicals ever.

(L to R) Ken Howard as Thomas Jefferson, Howard Da Silva as Benjamin Franklin, and William Daniels as John Adams

I'm extremely pleased with Enviroquest. I live in an area with a bad soil mixture comprised mostly of different types of clay. Enviroquest was the *only* company who quoted me a single price for any work that was necessary to get below 4.0 pCi/l. None of the others would guarantee results and just about all of them charge for additional taps. To top it off, Enviroquest had the best price by a few hundred dollars. They ended up coming out several times, installed multiple taps, and even upgraded the fan to the most powerful consumer version out there. But the end result is that I'm now below 4.0, I only had to pay once, their people were always friendly and courteous, and they honored their contract without question. Sure, it took multiple times, but I'm the kind of person who appreciates the fact that they're at least trying to satisfy the contract without looking for excuses to add extra charges. In fact, I'm quite sure that they ended up losing money on me if only from the fan upgrade. But my radon levels are now below 4.0, I only paid once, and they honored the contract. You can't ask for more.

I scheduled an appointment to have some plumbing work done, particularly a PVC vent to the roof line for my new upflushing toilet and some bad valve replacements. He surveyed the work to be done and gave me a quote around what I expected, so we set the date to have the work done. He and one of his associates (his son, maybe?) were out here early in the morning at 9 AM. They were completely finished by 1 PM. Everything was done exactly as requested. The most phenomenal part is that when I was handed the bill, it was about 1/2 of the estimate because everything went so smoothly! I was very willing to write that check, and I told them flat out "You have a positive referral." I'll have absolutely no problems calling them again when plumbing work needs to be done.
