This is very cool! Guys who think women can't be scientists or technicians just because they're women are a disgrace to men everywhere.

I'm sure that I'm going to stoke someone's fire with this, but whatever. The full text is at http://econfaculty.gmu.edu/wew/articles/00/black_confederates.html and is worth reading. As a 100% Yankee, I have no vested interest whatsoever; but the amount of ignorance surrounding this topic on both sides is almost palpable.

Oh, come on! First Saruman, now Fagin? :(
British actor Ron Moody, who was nominated for a best-actor Oscar and won a Golden Globe for his role role as Fagin in musical Oliver!, on Thursday died at the age of 91.

Rest in peace, Christopher Lee. Thank you for your gift of entertainment.
Christopher Lee, the mystical British actor whose haunting, intimidating performances as Count Dracula, the Frankenstein monster and Fu Manchu made him an icon of horror films and the cinematic embodiment of villainy, has died. He was 93.

So many movies... "The Wrath of Khan", "Krull", "Titanic", "Braveheart", and dozens of others. :(
James Horner, the consummate film composer known for his heart-tugging scores for Field of Dreams, Braveheart and Titanic, for which he won two Academy Awards, died Monday in a plane crash near Santa Barbara. He was 61.

An interesting read about an episode that changed the face of "Star Trek" on TV.
Ron Moore, Jonathan Frakes and more reveal how writing themselves into a corner for "Best of Both Worlds" changed Trek forever: "All of us were quite thrilled they had the balls to leave Picard on the Borg cube."

For you PC gamers who love your goofy first person shooters, "Shadow Warrior" is $4 for the regular version and $5 for the special edition (that's 90% off) or $1 for the classic look-and-feel version on Steam for the next 24 hours!
Shadow Warrior is a bold reimagining of the classic 3D Realms’ shooter from independent developer Flying Wild Hog (Hard Reset) starring the legendary and quick-witted warrior Lo Wang. Combine the brute force of overwhelming firepower with the elegant precision of a katana to annihilate the merciless armies of the shadow realm in an...

I'm extremely pleased with Enviroquest. I live in an area with a bad soil mixture comprised mostly of different types of clay. Enviroquest was the *only* company who quoted me a single price for any work that was necessary to get below 4.0 pCi/l. None of the others would guarantee results and just about all of them charge for additional taps. To top it off, Enviroquest had the best price by a few hundred dollars. They ended up coming out several times, installed multiple taps, and even upgraded the fan to the most powerful consumer version out there. But the end result is that I'm now below 4.0, I only had to pay once, their people were always friendly and courteous, and they honored their contract without question. Sure, it took multiple times, but I'm the kind of person who appreciates the fact that they're at least trying to satisfy the contract without looking for excuses to add extra charges. In fact, I'm quite sure that they ended up losing money on me if only from the fan upgrade. But my radon levels are now below 4.0, I only paid once, and they honored the contract. You can't ask for more.

I scheduled an appointment to have some plumbing work done, particularly a PVC vent to the roof line for my new upflushing toilet and some bad valve replacements. He surveyed the work to be done and gave me a quote around what I expected, so we set the date to have the work done. He and one of his associates (his son, maybe?) were out here early in the morning at 9 AM. They were completely finished by 1 PM. Everything was done exactly as requested. The most phenomenal part is that when I was handed the bill, it was about 1/2 of the estimate because everything went so smoothly! I was very willing to write that check, and I told them flat out "You have a positive referral." I'll have absolutely no problems calling them again when plumbing work needs to be done.
