My manager just gave me a copy of this, so not yet sure how/good or bad it is... She says there are few errors but mostly its a good read. However, it is currently VERY expensive (even for the ebook). Apparently I get a mention, but don't let that scare you off!
In order to be able to communicate and engage with each other via new communicative spaces such as Google Earth, we need to understand as much as possible about how they work as cultural texts: how and why we make them and how we respond to them. Launched in 2005, Google Earth is a virtual globe, map and geographical information program, mapping the Earth by the superimposition of images obtained from satellite imagery and aerial photography. By ...

The pricing is very strange. I guess they are treating it as an "academic text" but if they made a $30 paperback and/or e-copy I'm sure they'd sell many, many more.

I rarely make My Maps placemarkers in the wrong layer. But when I do...
Today we're launching two new features in My Maps to make editing your map easier: Move features from one layer to another. To move a feature, click on it and drag it to another layer. Rearrange the order of layers. To move a layer, click on the title of the layer and drag it up or down ...

What do you get in Google Earth Pro?

A lot of media sites have announced GE Pro becoming free, but I've yet to find a good description of what extra features it offers. So here is a quick summary:

PRINTING - options to print at high resolutions and add annotations (title, north arrow, etc).

MOVIE MAKER - record movement in GE as a .mov or .avi file. If you a have created a GE tour this can be automatically recorded as a move file.

MEASUREMENT - extra options including measuring 3D objects.

TABLE - shows the attributes of all "checked on" placemarks

GIS FILE SUPPORT - GeoTiff and .shp files are supported. Drag a GeoTiff into the 3D browser to see it auto-located as a GroundOverlay.

REGIONATE - for managing structure/viewing of large datasets.

VIEWSHED - create a placemark and right-click to see what is visible from that elevation.

NEW LAYERS - US census data. There is also an option to turn terrain on/off (use to be available in GE Basic).

Got it working after the GAFE summit in Christchurch - this is going to be great for our spatial analysis projects - heaps better than editing in PAINT etc to make keys and titles. Awesome - thanks

As we all know, the best way to make people want something is tell them they can't have it.

Google Maps turned 10 yesterday. It's almost impossible to remember a time when you couldn't instantly bring up directions or a satellite view on your laptop or phone. For those of us for whom Google Maps helps pay the rent, we'd rather not imagine!
