Cracked open a Modelo de Mayo from +Northern Brewer that I brewed over a year ago. It had been sitting on the yeast until I finally got around to bottling it a couple weeks ago. Still came out pretty darn well.

When we first started brewing, we were tight on the fermentation schedule. Then once we got into dry hopping and the like, we started going longer and longer on the ferment. I haven't gone a year on any of them, but we dry hop our IPA's now for about two months on average, and they're amazing.

It's a brew day for me today. I love watching the currents in the water as the grain steeps.

When steeping grains, consider tying the knot at the end of the bag, it allows for expansion and water to flow through.

Personal Run  -

Really need to stop making excuses and just get out and run. Went out this evening for the first time in 4 weeks. Need to get back in the running habit since I've got races to run and goals to beat!

I'm concerned about the half marathon I'm doing at the end of the month. Between finishing up at one job (left largely because I never had time for me and my family) and starting a new one, I have not been training nearly a well as I would have liked. Pretty sure I'll be able to finish, but my big goal of breaking two hours is looking less and less likely.

good look with that i remember doing my first half marathon which was a trail course and completed it in exactly 2 hours, you will be fine if you have managed to get up to 10 miles, between now and your race just keep going out for runs not more than 10 k distance and don't run for about 3 days for the race, this will be your recovery time so you will feel fresh and ready to go for the race Good Luck :)

OK. Did something wrong I think. Brewed a White House Honey Porter from Northern Brewer. Close to three weeks after bottling there is no carbonation at all--totally flat. Wasn't diligent about taking gravity readings, so maybe I left it in the fermentor too long and the yeast didn't have anything left to interact with the sugar? Any possibility of saving it? The flavor is good so worst case I'm making a lot of beer batter for fish fry...

Mid-week brew day! Have a one gallon batch of White House Honey Porter from +Northern Brewer currently in the cooling stage before pitching the yeast. Once I get that bottled we'll be moving on to some of their limited edition El Modelo de Mayo.

Nothing wrong with middle of the week brewing!

Did this in my VFF KSO Treks. Worst part was the occasional slushy puddle that I couldn't go around and had to splash through. It's why I actually prefer running when it's around 20F/-7C to 35F/+1C.

1/2 Marathon  -

Did my first half marathon race today. Securian Winter Run in Saint Paul with temps at gun time running right around 5F/-15C. Was not able to train for this race nearly as much as I would have liked so I tried to keep expectations down. I lined up a little ahead of the 2:10 pacer and focused on starting out nice and easy. Made it a point to start out easy. Once I passed about mile 5 I decided to see about starting to pass a few people--nothing too crazy, just worked on reeling in one person at a time. Kept that up through about mile 10 then settled back into trying to just maintaining. Ended up really happy with my final time. When I signed up for the race in the first place I was hoping to finish under 2 hours. With my total lack of training I still managed to turn in a 2:03. Makes me really excited for what I may be able to do with some actual training time.
