I believe that sharing photography is just as important as shooting. Here's why... In a new blog post:

http://www.joeyl.com/blog/#!sharing-is-just-as-important-as-shooting

An excerpt:

"My theory is this- the more eyeballs that land on my work, the more likely it is that one pair of those eyeballs is in a position to hire me for a job. Sure, most of the people who follow my work are other photographers, but some of these people are also photo editors or creative directors and art buyers from advertising agencies. Some of them are writers and curators of blogs with much larger followings than my own. The point is this- if you put something on the internet, it can be easily shared and spread to thousands, or millions of eyes. There’s the archaic thought that “sharing secrets” is career suicide, or it somehow devalues what you do. I disagree. My personal philosophy is to never be afraid to share, and embrace everything that comes with it- both the good and bad. I view sharing as a catalyst for artistic growth. Out with the old, in with the new. If I’ve posted something online, it means I’m done with it and ready to move on to the next thing."

Portrait of actor Dylan McDermott. I was impressed with Dylan because he knows a lot about photography and we share a lot of the same tastes in favorites.

Special thanks to +Nick Leadlay and +Pratik Naik  for helping with the retouching and mask. This photo was actually taken in a small green room, and we composited in a landscape I shot in Bolivia a couple years ago while on this assignment for History:

This key art I shot for Lifetime's "The Gabby Douglas Story" was put into the public the other day. I've seen it around on some phone booths & bus shelters in NYC, but if you find it anywhere else, feel free to share.

Gabby has a very inspirational story, being a double gold medal winning gymnast at the 2012 Summer Olympics at the age of 16. Here's some more info about the film:

Portrait of Ellen Burstyn, actress. From my new blog post:

http://www.joeyl.com/blog/#!gunk-the-lens-flowers-in-the-attic

During our lunch break, the 80-year old actress remarked, “I want to move back to the city because I’m growing bored living in the sticks. I want some excitement in my life!” This resonated with me because I hope to still be pushing myself creatively at that age. I think we can all take a page from Ellen Burstyn’s book: Focus on the things we can be truly passionate about for a lifetime.

Okay folks... The time has come. Today I’m proud to announce the launch of my BRAND NEW TUTORIAL SITE:

http://www.LearnFromJoeyL.com

Learn From Joey L is a tutorial site to share the photography, lighting and Photoshop techniques I have cultivated over the years. It is very much a personal project dedicated to those who find inspiration in my work and are interested in learning from me.

The site is very unique compared to the ways I’ve sold tutorials in the past. This time, video lessons are sold individually and “a la carte”. These bite-size tutorials are available immediately after purchase. This means after you unlock a video, you can do whatever the hell you want with it- stream it directly from my site, download the video in 1080p HD and cozy up to your laptop, or even take it with you on your phone to watch on an airplane.

So, feel free to head on over to the site and check it out. Every tutorial has a trailer to give you an idea of the quality of the content. There’s also a special launching sale of 15% off until Jan 1st. The site is in a very young stage and will continue to evolve over time. If you have an idea for a specific lesson or technique you’d like to see, shoot me a comment.
