Getting Amazon Prime Video to play on Ubuntu 13.04

I don't know if this has been spoken about before but this is how I was able to get Amazon Prime Video to play on Ubuntu 13.04.

First I downloaded the latest Flash Player offering from Adobe.com: http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/otherversions

Then I followed the instructions on Adobe's site for installing Flash on a Linux system. http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/multi/flash-player-11-problems-playing.html

Upto this point, DRM playback still will not function properly and will return a DRMerror message or something.

Then I followed the instructions by Jorge Castro. http://askubuntu.com/a/289341

sudo mkdir /etc/hal/fdi/preprobe

sudo mkdir /etc/hal/fdi/information

/usr/sbin/hald --daemon=yes --verbose=yes

rm -rf ~/.adobe

After doing what Jorge posted and restarting my browser (Firefox at the time) Amazon Prime Videos played with no problem.

Hope that helps someone out there!

It's pretty obvious #Adobe  is abandoning support for #Linux . First they announced how Flash for Linux will cease to exist and now they are quietly not updating their PDF reader for Linux.

The Flash situation might iron it self out with HTML 5 with enough time but what about PDF? I think it's time a truly open standard alternative to PDF should be made in the same way ODF was created.

PDF is a "open standard" but Adobe has strict control over it which prevents others from making useful tools that uses the PDF format. The specification only outlines creating and viewing PDFs, if you want to do annotations, forms, and other features like those, you would have to pay royalties to Adobe for the privilege. What would be nice is if a foundation would be created with a pannel. The foundation would then direct the creation of a truly open standard for a PDF like format. Microsoft is trying to do this but they are trying to hold to too much control of the format just as Adobe has done.

It would be nice if the Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards (OASIS) creates a solution. They are the ones that created the ODF format. https://www.oasis-open.org/
