A SHOOT AND A SMILE
I wrote an entry on the studio blog about a recent personal portfolio project I did with Carrie Strahle of Carrie Strahle Makeup Artistry, Allyson Carroll, and model Madison Coco. The concept required a pretty girl, soda pop and attitude. We found all three. I hope you like the images.

As I was grilling on the back porch yesterday and looking off to the east I saw some amazing fall clouds just begging me to photograph them and give them immortality. I gave in.

I love, love, love when my photographic work does good. Though just making a living making images is important to me — I'd get kinda hungry otherwise — I very much love when I see my photographic work making a difference in the world!

Also, go to the tournament! It sounds like a lot of fun and, as the movie says, you don't want to cross Leland.
I always enjoy seeing my work I do for my clients put to good use. Here’s a great example. I shot these promotional photos of Leland for the The Baby Leland Foundation that protects infant children in Multnomah and Washington County from abuse and neglect. The organization works to promote awareness of domestic violence and mandatory reporting laws. It supports abused and neglected infants and their families through its grant prog...

I'm very proud of this headshot I did of Alexandra Renee. It was a very nice combination of looks, attitude of Alexandra, overall styling and makeup by Carrie Strahle of Carrie Strahle Makeup Artistry and my photography. It just all came together to make something beautiful and I'm pleased.

I’ve talked about my fears as a full-time working photographer from time to time because it’s a big part of what I do and I believe my fears are necessary to give me an edge and make me the best at what I do. As someone once wrote, “If you kill fear, you kill creativity.”

Here are a few statements from this video that really resonated with me personally based on my own experience.

“If you’re faced with the fate of being an artist, then you have to figure out a way to do it. This is not an easy life.”Gregory Crewdson

“Not many people luck their way into a career or success. What’s common amongst everyone making a living with photography is that they work extremely hard, every day.”Ryan Enn Hughes

“I want people to be hungry. I want them to go out there and know that they have to really pound the pavement and be hungry to be successful. If it feels good while you’re doing it, you’re not doing it right. You should be suffering a little bit.”Eric Crosland

On the drive in to work at the studio this morning I listened to the song, “On a Clear Day” as performed by, “The Peddlers.” It’s a good day for today. And even though it is a clear day meteorologically speaking, it was a good song for other reasons.

I'm so very proud of all my reporters over the years. It gives me great hope that even though I left the industry after a few decades as a newspaperman, my reporters have gone on to do great things. Working with them in the beginning of their careers leaves me feeling like a proud father as I watch them flourish and do the good work for our world that motivated me when I started all those years ago. I just can't get over how damn proud I am of them. (I'm repeating myself now, huh?)

Here’s a video clip of my former sports and business reporter Christopher Miller. He’s living in Ukraine and working as the editor of the Kiev Post. CNN’s Anderson Cooper interviewed him about all violent protests in Kiev recently.

And if you’re on the other side of the world in Los Angeles, you can read the fine work of my former reporter Abby Sewell as she reports for the LA Times and chronicles the life of a great city.

Just imagine these two in 10 more years! Fasten your seatbelts, people!
There are reports Ukraine's Interior Ministry is issuing combat weapons to police officers. Tensions are rising in Kiev after a day of deadly violence. There are concerns tanks could soon roll into Independence Square.

Scott Kelly | a portrait

Scott Kelly posed for me in my studio recently for a conceptual composite that I’m still working on. But after we shot the photos for the composite, he sat for a portrait. I was going for a low-key, high-contrast portrait that had an almost illustrated look. Here is the result.
