Galaxy S5 vs. HTC One (M8): Which should you get?

Two of the most eye-catching Android phones of the year are begging for our attention right now -- and all the hype can make it hard to know which one's right for you.

So let's make this simple, shall we? After living with both devices, I've put together the following guide to help you figure it out:

What outrageously stupid logic. The #ipad install base is enormous compared to #chromebook. Of course interest will be greater for the widely more-popular platform. Besides, Chromies already could run #office cloud. Microsoft just packaged up for greater visibility. Venture Beat? Deadbeat news reporting.

Google does what Apple should -- use software development wits to add hardware smarts. This is exactly the kind of thing I would expect from the fruit-logo company first. But that's a number recently missing from the iOS crop.

#googlecamera
Android phones running stock or manufacturer-installed KitKat 4.4+ get a big photo-shooting upgrade today. Google Camera is now available from the Play store. The app replaces the standard shooter on Nexus devices and places a separate camera app on others. The headline feature: Lens Blur, which does exactly what the name indicates. You shoot the image, and then use the app to either blur the foreground or background. Photographers call the capab...

Well said. All I could do to express my thoughts was "lens blur is cool"

Bokeh Shootout! Google Camera and HTC One M8

If you don't know that Google Camera is available from the Play Store, you're really missing out (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.GoogleCamera). I applied  #googlecamera  to #nexus7  but don't dare to #htconem8  for fear it will ruin the existing app.

Google Camera uses software tricks to apply blur objects in a photo (e.g. bokeh). The One uses a second lens to capture additional image data and then apply the blur effect. Both can blur objects in the foreground or background.

Google Camera primer: http://googleresearch.blogspot.com/2014/04/lens-blur-in-new-google-camera-app.html

The One UFocus Primer: http://www.htc.com/us/support/htc-one-m8/howto/464950.html

I conducted a down-and-dirty test in challenging circumstances -- meaning not how either feature is intended to be used. In both examples below, I attempted (and hopefully succeeded) to set the plane of focus on the woman pictured lower center on the #hpchromebook14  screen.

So which blurs best? I'll reveal the cameras in comments.

This is what you can expect from HTC One M8 in ridiculously low light.

Colored LEDs circle my daughter's room, where Neko likes to sleep on the bed. The light isn't much, perhaps equivalent to a candle or two. Maybe. The room is damn dim.

I shot a series of photos last night. All grainy like this, which is to be expected. Every single one is in focus, which is commendable considering conditions. The One unsurprisingly auto-selected 3200 ISO for them all.

I'm not exactly in love with the #acer   #c720p   #chromebook . For anyone looking for touch, speed, and battery life, C720P offers loads of value. But the cheap plastic and dim display put me off.
I struggle to aptly describe my feelings about Acer's affordable touchscreen Chromebook. The C720P is the lover you keep in the dark, for the benefits, but which you wouldn't be seen with in the daylight. Performance and battery life are wow-worthy. But the plastic exterior looks and feels cheap, and the touchscreen is too dim -- well, for my tastes.

Take back the tap.

Is bottled water better for you than tap water?
Short answer: No
Bottled water is no safer or purer than tap water, although it is substantially more expensive.
A recent study by Glasgow University in the U.K. found that bottled water is actually
more likely to be contaminated than water from your faucet because it is less well-regulated.
Bottled water and tap water typically come from the same sources — natural springs, lakes, and aquifers.
While public water supplies are tested for contaminants every day, makers of bottled water are only required
to test for specific contaminants every week, month, or year.

Soooo, #googlecsmera  installs as a separate app on #htconem8 . I took both phones with the phone use each. Google Camera applies blur to one and HTC UFocus to the other.

Can you tell which is which? Is there enough difference to matter?

The top picture looks more natural. The depth of field isn't extremely shallow, so there might be "too little blur", but at least the blur looks relatively natural. The bottom picture, while superficially decent looking, doesn't have a consistent and natural-looking focus plane. Combine the difference of focus of the ears and the eyes, and there is no way the closest part of the pillow would be that sharp. Also, weird blur artifacts on the pillow to the left and right of the plushie. Finally, I think the background of the lower pic should be even more blurry with the dramatic difference between ears and eyes, which suggests a very narrow focus plane.

Whether the difference is big enough to matter, hmm. Not sure. It's kinda subtle, but I prefer the top one, and to me, that matters :-)

This evening I cancelled my Samsung Chromebook 2 preorder. I'm too cautious about the 250-nit non-IPS display to purchase sight unseen. I expect the screen to disappoint, despite Samsung being a panel maker. Every #chromebook  I've tested, except #hpchromebook11  and #chromebookpixel  is a frakup because of the dim, cheap display.

Yup, the samsung chromebook is great... for the price. A brighter screen with higher resolution would be really great.
