5-12-11 Kokubun

The house I renovated ten years ago has been demolished. On the one hand, the plan was for it to suffice for only a year or three, so a whole decade was more than expected. On the other hand, I feel a bit of a loss because it was a big project with results I was proud of. Bryan and I did tile for the first time in the kitchen there with a surprisingly good outcome.

On reflection, it was the doing and learning that mattered, and making a first –albeit temporary– home for my kids. So! I'm going to say it's one of the few projects that is now fully and unambiguously completed!

This is what can happen trying to scan a "road" between rice fields. No wonder it was skipped until now!

Took most of a hour to get out of that ditch.

Spies! They're everywhere!

Early this morning I discovered a mole in my own household. For sundry reasons I was up all night. Just before dawn, as I was sitting on the living room floor, contemplating the latest modifications to a surveillance drone, some movement out in the entryway caught my eye. It turned out to be a mole! It waddled along the baseboard as I scrambled for something with which to trap it. But it must have sensed my presence ("seen" being too generous a verb for this critter) and before I could nab it, it squirmed under the sofa.

I guessed I'd found the reason all the rugs downstairs were disheveled when I got home.

I trapped it unharmed and despite my deep loathing for the destruction it or its kin had wreaked on my lawn recently, I set it free. Not too nearby mind you; about 300 meters away in the local nature preserve. There's both a small river and a highway project that pass between here and there so I'm confident there'll be no returning to my garden for this particular invader.

Good morning Barcelona! Fabulous views from the AirBnB apartment where I'm staying with the FabCafe folks.

Tonight is the ceremony for the Global Fab Awards. Safecast is a finalist and I'm here at Fab10 to share our story, meet amazing people, and —if by some fluke Nader Effect we win— accept the award.

"Sigh" Design Indeed

This sign (or sigh?) marks the new wading pool, or "jabu-jabu pond" at Takami Park in Minamisoma. It made me sigh when I saw it so maybe the design succeeded after all!
