Another from 1982 for March Madness.  Joe writes,"March Madness in full swing. This all starts w kids' dreams. Shot long ago, story for +Sports Illustrated  on Indiana HS hoops."  I found more of Joe's words about this particular assignment as he explained, "The best story I ever did for them was one of the first I ever shot; Indiana High School basketball. What a wonderful story to shoot. I rambled all over the back roads of Indiana for three weeks, shooting pictures of kids who just played for the love of it and practiced shooting at a hoop nailed over a barn door. It was rich, and real, and the magazine did a great job running it. They gave it about thirty pages, which was unheard of for a publication like that. Really nice. Most have been a difficult shot to get setting sun , water and model illuminated enough. Well done

Joe's very first assignment for LIFE Magazine was Mary Lou Retton in 1984, he writes, "Mary Lou won the overall gold and several others of different shades to bring her medal haul to five. At that point, as I recall, she had yet to be photographed with all of them. So, in the brief period we had together, we conjured a hat in honor of her training home in Texas and figured out a way to rig the medals on it. (This was quick, direct magazine photography at that point. No stylists, makeup, smoke machines or art directors out there with us.)"

The whole story is here:  http://blog.joemcnally.com/2012/08/06/a-new-smile-in-town/

Barely a handful of seats left for Joe's lecture tomorrow at +School of Visual Arts in New York.  It does  happen to be free.  So if you want to hear Joe talk about The Wonder of Light, you had better move on it now.

The +Burj Khalifa tower, Joe writes, "  tallest structure in the world, soars out of the sands like a sharply constructed, elegant needle, seemingly designed to pop the blue balloon of sky overhead."

Just to give you some perspective when you look at the job the window washers do on this tower every day to clean away the desert sand.
